Does making Gruden our only option hurt us?

4 threads worth of Gruden love shows that most of VN is all in. Rumors abound that the large boosters are all in. By many of these accounts short of Gruden there is no plan B.

Gruden's turned down many good offers before so I wonder if this wouldn't/couldn't be one collosal backfire given all the coaches likely to be replaced this off season. At the very least having no plan B makes for sketchy negotations if Gruden does start fielding fresh multimillion dollar offers. Which he likely is or has.

FTR this isn't a doubt thread or meant as a negative thread I'm just curious what everyone else thinks of our Gruden or bust plan. As much as I like the idea of Gruden coming here I prefer the idea of us exploring several great candidates.

Also for the fan's perspective building up all hopes on one guy sure seems like a good way to be left dissapointed. Especially when your one choice is so high profile and so many high profile organizations will be seeking new coaches, both College as well as NFL.

The fact they are starting early(if true) makes me feel confident they are gonna make a good hire. We don't have to rush. Lots of time to work things thru before the end of the season. Now come Dec 1st if nothing's happened I will start to fear the worst.

I doubt we're only reaching out to Gruden. A real AD would have backup options.

Then again, if it's only boosters talking at this point, it's not an official coaching search, and it's anybody's guess what's really going on.

I would say that isn't a plan at all or it's a pretty narrow one. If the pockets are essentially unlimited as you're insinuating here you'd have even greater options, or at least more proven ones. Like for example offering Saban himself.

Yea, Hart should have the list printed in the KNS for everyone to see. :crazy:

And for the record, I dont think I could stomach seeing Saban in orange. :sick:

I'm not the one whose insinuated we have a one coach plan. I'm just relaying what i've read in that one guys threadS.

I'm going by the ASSumptions so far on the board. Haven't seen a 4 part thread on our coaching search. Just a 4 part mini-series on Gruden. Which was kind of the point we haven't really had a discussion on our search we've had a discussion about one guy.

My bad, I do think they have a fall back plan but 2nd on the list is nowhere near Gruden. Its kinda like the 1965 race at Darlington. Ned Jarrett won by 14 laps. 2nd on the list is about 14 laps behind Gruden. :hi:

Yes. Making Gruden our only option hurts us. Badly.

Obviously, if you get him, it doesn't matter. But just keep in mind, this guy can make 6-7million no matter where he goes next. He's got alot of options and he has turned us down before. Maybe it works out this time, but you would have to be insane to put all your eggs in that barrel.

But it appears that is what we are doing. Otherwise, we should have fired Dooley today and started a real coaching search. Now, by the time Gruden turns us down, we're going to be stuck playing catch up to all the other big name schools who will need new coaches. It's not a good postion to be in at all.

Basillio has said there is a list with more than just Gruden. He is obviously our First option but sounds like there is a plan B with successful Coach's. As long as Dooley is gone we will have a good coach, especially with the Boosters running the show.

I completely disagree. The last thing we need is another circus of a search. They have Dooley over a barrel, let him hang while you do a very discreet search and are sure your guy will take it before a formal offer is made. Also, he did not turn us down before.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I was just making the point that the "We" you were talking about are a few hundred people on message boards. The "We" that matters haven't said squat about what the plan is. There has been a lot of yapping on here about what the plan is and exactly none of it has come about. It wouldn't surprise me if Dooley is the coach next year and it wouldn't surprise me if somebody else is. I think Hart has been checking on some things but I doubt any decision has been made yet no matter what the people "in the know" say. I say let's just go win out then worry about next year.

Hey man, I hope you're right. But I'm not confident that Hart and the boosters can pull off some discreet (and illegal) coaching search effectively. There is a reason that most big time programs end up doing these big searches and getting turned down before they find their guy. It's not easy to interview and negotiate and get it all done in secret. And keep in mind, alot of these boosters we're counting on had a hand in hiring Dooley in the first place.

And I'm not clear on what happened with Gruden and UT previously. Maybe you have some insider knowledge I don't, but it's fair to say that he has turned down plenty of attractive coaching offers thus far. I don't think UT can assume he's anything but a longshot.

But, like I said, I hope you're right. The good thing is, we should know how effective the strategy has been in a month or two when we find out if we got a big name/proven winner or not. Until then, unfortunately, it's going to be an ugly November.

I appreciate you guys clarifying what you meant. If nothing else I guess my question was does it do us fans any good to get all geared up for one coach choice? Seems like most are potentially setting themselves and others up for serious let down. Lot of guys seem positive still and I'm not negative just a tad skeptical regarding what has been communicated as the inside info track.

If any insider has mentioned a plan B outside of Gruden and DD staying let me know.

Your exactly right, these same guys did have a hand in hiring Dooley. Much more than most people know but for whatever reason they weren't willing to spend the big money then. It appears that is not the case now.

From what I have been told there were two big names that threw out numbers it would take to get them here last time. One was Gruden and the money guys weren't willing to pay it.

Anyone who thinks Gruden is our only option obviously knows nothing about searching for a coach...Hart has a nice list ready and I am sure he has gauged interest in those on the list...When the time is right he will start the interview processes and see who the right fit for the program is.
