Anyone else think it strange that McIlwain immediately announced he'll start a 6'4" 240 lb QB w no SEC experience?

As opposed to two freshmen who have never played college ball? Not surprised at all.

Appleby has started 16 games since 2013... he had similar stats as Etling while at Purdue, and Etling doesn't look bad at all at the moment. Of course, this is a little harder to say the least as Etling has had time in home games to get use to the SEC.

mcelwain believes in stay in the pocket, game manager type QBs, not runners.

I would not characterize Appleby as a runner, but he's not a statue either. He's a little more mobile than Del Rio, he ran that spread-option stuff at Purdue and actually has some decent runs on tape.

But I'd be beyond shocked if McElwain has planned runs in for Appleby. Any runs from him will probably be of the scrambling, broken play variety.

Both Freshmen back-up QB's are pocket passers too.

Florida does have a "wildcat" package where they direct snap to a RB, which we haven't seen all year long.

Hmm, may be something for UT to watch out for.

I'm more worried about them pounding the ball with their power running game than any QB on their roster.

That's one of the things that has me really wondering about the coaching chess match that will go on for this game.

If UF tries to power run the ball all game long, it seems that would play in to UT's strength; their D-line. It seems the passing game would take more advantage of UT's depleted LB's and Secondary, but do you trust Appleby to do that?

It'll be fascinating to watch it play out.

UT must stuff 'em, get the Gayduhs into 3rd and long, cover the receivers like Sherman Williams, pressure the QB, force dump offs, then put the safety valve immediately on the turf. UF should have more three-&-outs than their previous three games combined. Frustrate them. Force mistakes. Capitalize.

That's what we thought last several years Flawda subbed a new QB. I hope we are ready to unleash considerable hell on Friday and willing to lay it all on the line. Got to follow the Maxims. Turnovers have been problematic for us this year, but saved our bacon against VT.

You would think that this would play right into our hands considering our D-Line now the strongest part of our D. But it is Florida, so all conventional wisdom is out the window.

Did I miss something?

It doesn't matter who they start. Whomever it is will come out and have a career game.

Even if, with the injuries in your secondary, the defensive line is the strongest part of your defense, it does not fit us to try to pass. We may simply not be in a position to take advantage of your weaker components given what we have.

This isn't the NFL. We will have had to devise a game plan, quickly, with limited opportunities for Appelesauce to screw up, then get him as many snaps as we can just to make that go as smoothly as possible. I doubt they can spend pretty much any time tuning things around opposition game film, as they would have with Rio.

It will be culled down to maybe a half dozen basic formations, almost all run plays, and hardly anything at all downfield. Maybe two or three such plays, and only if we spot something in your defense that day that opens it up with no risk of a turnover. Tendency to a broken coverage, for example. Even if Callaway can play, its going to be a matter of a quick out and hope he can make some folks miss.

Otherwise, if we win the coin flip, we are deferring. We want to be on defense as much as possible. Look for us to run kicks back when its possible. Take some chances on defensive scoring.

This is going to be all hands on deck, keep it simple, and rely on the running backs to sustain a drive.

Treon was in an off season running program.......usually with a German Shepard in pursuit.

Florida has closed practice all week to the media, any chance Del Rio could be healthy enough to go?

Yeah, here's your freakin limited game plan...He'll go 1-2 with an 80 yard TD to a one-legged Calloway with 1:20 remaining winning 7-3.
