Does ESPN even try?

ESPN is much more concerned with political correctness & self-righteous claptrap than about accuracy. Only a few legitmate sports journalist in that den of punks. :whistling:

They can try to hype Fsu as much as they want but that program is taking a serious nosedive come 2015 after that performance

ESPN is pretty much the worst of all the recruiting services. I don't think they even try that hard because they know everyone is reading 247, Scout, and Rivals.

Star rankings play into pre season rankings IIRC. Which I only care about because it can have an impact on game times and coverage. That and other recruits seeing us as a major destination are the only reason some of us care.

Recruiting rankings stopped mattering much to me around the time Daniel Brooks and Chris Donald were recruited to the Vols.

I'd suggest trying it sometime.

Stars matter if for no other reason than they attract other solid recruits. I agree that it matters less than what happens on the field, but it does matter. ESPN yesterday was debating the demise of the SEC...and I might add the return "back to its rightful place at the top" of the Big 10. These guys suck and Buckeye Herbstreet calling the title game should tell us that if we still didn't know for sure. Granted the SEC was down at the QB position, we aren't going anywhere. Ignore ESPN.

Stars matter because players with higher ratings/rankings usually have very good talent. The recruiting services will miss about as many as they notice... but the ones they notice have a pretty high success rate.

Might as well be the Big 10 Network. Herbstreit calling the title game of his school and all the build up drama that came pre and post game ridiculous bias especially. I don't recall much hype and build up to any National Championship Game with SEC team playing. Do you?

Here is a LINK that infers you are correct, and backs it up with numbers.

Sure. There is always hype, but for OSU to be covered by Kirk in the title game was a little over the line imo. I bet the SEC had more teams ranked at the end of the season and will have more to start next season than the Big 10 and yet they are now "at the top"? Please...I know the rest of the country hates on the SEC, but that's just ridiculous.
Also, great link above on why stars matter. I think it is why Oregon cant win titles. To me, they struggle with more physical and more talented (more stars) teams like LSU, AU, and OSU. FSU was too finesse and made far too many mistakes. Good read:good!:

I just noticed ESPN's final recruiting rankings just came out, and I cannot help but laugh at some of their rankings...

McKenzie #26 overall. #5 DT...
Phillips #70 overall #9 DE
Jennings- Still listed as an Athlete...
Tuttle- #7 DT

The only positive thing I see from ESPN rankings is that they don't blow up the Alabama players. Their highest rated is Sheffield at #12 overall.

FSU has 3 of top 11...

Tim Settle is a 5* for goodness sakes...

The ESPN rankings have almost as much respectability as Scout (which is low).

I hear ya. I've gotten to where I really don't care about all the ratings anymore. How many four and five-star players have we seen just implode. I just take it with a little grain of salt and go on. We will see what happens on the field where it really counts.

GO VOLS!

Add another OT to this class and on paper it will be one of the most Talented classes we every had in my 44 years as fan, I don't give a Damn what Tom ESPN X bench sitting QB that played at the Powerful Georgia Tect says.:banghead2:

No offense but I seriously doubt you have any clue what guys like K Mac and Phillips should be ranked vs other top players that you likely can't even name :p

When someone starts a comment like 'no offense'...the offense is bound to follow. Unnecessary negativity. 15 yard penalty.

Well, while it does seem ESPN is not exactly keeping pace with 247, they are a good check and balance
to Scout and Rivals.

And its hard to complain when they have UT with 17 four* recruits in this class. The rest is just semantics.
They have valuable analysis and scouting reports you dont get with other services, you might not always agree
but in many cases its just splitting hairs.
