Does Barnes neuter his players? (Offense)

I’m not unhappy at all BUT we should be much better. I’m not talking record wise. Burns was another one. Also non of those guys are playing legit pro ball. Fulkerson was here for 20 years

How so? We are Top 5 team and then winningest SEC team the last 3-4 years iirc

Mamories like ephlants sum of ya. Bump a 3 year old post when a Bruce team scores under 50.

As long as players are getting good, open looks…it isn’t the scheme or coaching.
Exactly. Barnes said in an interview that we've got guys passing up good looks. He's not neutering anyone. He demands tremendous effort on defense and that takes a lot of juice night in and night out. I'm convinced the late season fades are a result of fatigue/dead legs. Won't be repetitive about shortening the bench since I've done enough of that elsewhere. One sure sign...at least to my eye...is short shots and free throws. I also look at our tendency to see everyone go cold all at the same time. Same for our habitual fade as the season reaches tournament time. Might be wrong, but it all fits with fatigue IMO. I'd consider very light practices/days off and using my bench to control minutes played for the remainder of the regular season. And no I'm not saying to give up on a high speed. Just don't shorten the bench and watch your combinations when you go to the bench. We did it pretty well early in the year and had success. Stay with that and get ready for March.

Better to play a longer bench during the season and preserve energy…even if it leads to a few more losses. Then shorten the bench in the tournament and go with your best lineup.

Offensively I believe he does. One thing Barnes does that kills me is he will take a player who has scored consecutive buckets, or who has just hit a big three out of the game for making a mistake defensively or making an errant pass. Most recently he did this to Nkamhoua in the Florida game. He had just scored twice in the post, then hits a three to give him 7 points in 3 back to back to back possessions, then the next possession he makes a bad pass, Barnes take him out, and we immediately go into an offensive drought. Barnes used to drive me crazy doing the same thing to Jordan Bowden, he’d hit a couple threes mess up defensively then get taken out. It’s almost like Barnes being so quick to pull guys keeps them from getting the hot hand, and in some cases it seems like he doesn’t want to ride the guy who has the hot hand. This is one of the reasons I preferred Pearl over Barnes.

He’s so much worse than Bruce Pearl, who does not neuter his player’s confidence at all. Auburn has a far advanced offense to Rick Barnes, due to him not neutering his players.
So far advanced they couldn't outscore Tennessee's 46 total points.

How many points did Auburn score yesterday?

I keep saying this about Barnes: He is who his full-career body of work says he is. He's a defensive coach. Defensive and rebounding are the identity of Barnes teams. The short shrift he gives to offense is the reason he has only one FF in 30 plus years of trying. That isn't going to change, because Barnes isn't going to change. With Barnes, we will get a 70%+ winning percentage, a lot of good wins at home and away during the course of the season, a few head scratching losses, a conference championship here and there, and an early exit in the national tournament. I for one am very glad to have him despite the early exits in the tourney because of all the other positive things about him.

Is that why Pearl has lost the last three times vs Barnes? Do you realize that Barnes has only 6 less career wins than Calipari and has beaten Calipari more than Pearl has. Did you really think that we would be in the top ten, before the season? You should thank your lucky star that he fell in our lap. He has recruited better talent than any coach in UT history.

And, so far, he hasn't recruited anyone arrested for illegal gun possession, drugs, drunken brawling, and worse.

I agree with the first initial point — Barnes appears very unforgiving to mistakes, takes guys out…. I think him being so critical makes those players (who the offense has given open looks) to second guess themselves.

Burns was not a 5 star. Roughly the 80th ranked player in the class. Went to Winthrop and then NC State and still isn’t in shape. Most guys aren’t going to be playing “legit” pro ball. Not even late first rounders after 3 years. They were all 3/4 stars that became high level college players. Not sure what you expect. Other schools are the same- you hold Barnes to a strange standard.

Offensively, I think Barnes limits his players. He recruits incredibly elite athletes, and then makes them slow down to fit into his system. I don't think it is about confidence. I just think he doesn't care or know how to shape an offense around high flying, elite athletes.
He rewards those who practice well and don't screw up on the court. I think that is the way I would coach.
