It’s an outlandish subject title, but truly I sometimes feel like our players in the hands of a softer coach would feel more confident to play their game…. I think Barnes makes players more disciplined, but his intensity may at times neuter a players confidence? Y’all will pick apart what I’m trying to say…. Psychology/confidence it’s just so nuanced. Would Phillips be where he’s at this season under Nate Oats? Would a guy like Brandon Miller be as effective and confident under Barnes instruction?

Sounds soft to me

I do think his style/philosophy produces tentative offense. I also think it’s difficult for guys to gain confidence and fully develop their offensive game. I think I saw where we had 0 transition points against Florida . . . not sure how that’s even possible. And before the “if you criticize anything about the team you’re a disloyal and unreasonable POS” crowd starts in, I don’t think we should move on from CRB. If we did, there’s a 9 in 10 chance we’d get worse.

I get what you're saying, but I see plenty of undisciplined play at times from this team in particular. As an extreme example, I have a hard time imagining an even less "disciplined" Uros working out elsewhere. Perhaps there's something to be said for major talent a la Phillips, Chandler and Johnson/Springer being "freer' to fail and possibly grow in a less strict environment, but for the squads we've seen since Barnes' arrival I can't say I'd like it if the reins were loosened.

If by neuter you mean he does not support them taking shots from the logo with 22 seconds left on the shot clock, then yes
He’s so much worse than Bruce Pearl, who does not neuter his player’s confidence at all. Auburn has a far advanced offense to Rick Barnes, due to him not neutering his players.

Duh. If this game has shown anything it is that Bruce Pearl is a genius offensive mind. The sets Auburn has ran this game have just been *chef's kiss*. It's why they are scoring so much

Offensively, I think Barnes limits his players. He recruits incredibly elite athletes, and then makes them slow down to fit into his system. I don't think it is about confidence. I just think he doesn't care or know how to shape an offense around high flying, elite athletes.

Ooo, I’m not implying that! 😳 CBP lets his teams play street ball and imo is the complete opposite of the spectrum of CRB. It’s CBP 0 discipline (and overly emotional) versus CRB too much criticism/discipline.

I wouldn't think of it as neutering. Barnes is a defense first coach and probably puts more focus on defense than he does offense. The rap on Barnes teams at Texas was - superior defense, average to above average offense (depending). The rap on Barnes at Tennessee is more or less the same.

For a team yo start a game shooting as tight as this one did today, something is wrong. There were 3 or 4 airballs in first 10 shots it seemed.

I’m not sure if there’s a causality, but there’s not one guy on this team you can rely on to get it done offensively on any given night. That’s what makes it difficult to be optimistic about making it out of the first weekend on the NCAAT.

OK, rant on.

This didn’t age well.

Is the argument that our guys aren't afraid to shoot, or that the offense doesn't give them open looks? Neither of those are true today. We bricked open shots from all over the floor, and we took 63 shots. Sometimes the solution is to just hit the shots
