Does anyone here think we were honestly the "best" team in 98?

Don't forget that '01 Miami (one of the best teams ever) nearly lost to Boston College.

Miami was up 12-7 with about a minute to go, BC was down around the Miami 10-yard-line, when a tipped ball was intercepted by a DT, who had the ball taken from him by Ed Reed, who returned it for a TD.

At the same time, that Miami team only trailed for like 5 minutes the entire year, and that was because against VT, the Hokies took their opening drive down for a FG. On the next possession, the Canes answered.

IIRC, which of course I might not. But if I AM remembering correctly, that stat is absolutely absurd.

Who was better? That Syracuse team we struggled to beat on their extremely favorable home field, played in a BCS bowl. Arkansas was undefeated when we played them.

Luck played into it, but who was better?

In sports many things attribute to whether you win or lose. Any team or single athlete can falter and the reasons are endless. All that matters is who wins in the end. Now to ask whether Tennessee had the best team in 98; the answer has to be yes.

To pose the hypothetical and say that if someone wouldn't have gotten hurt or wouldn't have made a catch or fumble or anything to that effect is pointless. Tennessee was undefeated. Now if anyone brings up that one team had better athletes or whatever, that's a statical point of view. Games are settled on the field and those who played Tennessee that year were not the better team that day.

The 1998 Tennessee team was the most consistent in that they won every game so in my book that makes them the best that year.JMO

I don't want to read the whole thread and probably this has already been pointed out, but we got the trophy, didn't we?:dance2:

Next question...

Edit: Yep, been said a couple times before me.

As far as Utah, when they start knockin' heads every year in the SEC and go undefeated, then yes, I will consider them the National Champs....

If you only knew how many times I've been told by a FSU fan that "If Weinke was healthy If our all-everything, sickeningly hyped up Heisman winner Peter Warrick could have made a freaking punter miss an open-field tackle, we would have won..."

I think that's what they really mean to say.

UT was the best team in 1998. In fact 98 Vols still rated as 2nd most successful team (based upon games actually played) all time by R Billingsley's college FB rating system. Notice how close the Ratings of number one and two are in contrast to the large gap down to number three. That team was great. Please stop defaming the most accomplished UT team in the past 50 years.

Yes I know we won the championship and I am as happy as anyone about that!

We were very lucky that year! We were lucky with Syracuse, with Arkansas, with Florida, and with Miss St in the SEC championship game. We were never "world beaters" against anyone. We never really dominated anyone except for Georgia and struggled to win many of our games!

Then there's the fact that we played Florida St. in the championship game. A team that "back doored" their way into the championship game and they had to start a freshman at QB.

Honestly, I think in terms of actual talent I think we were about the 3rd or 4th best team in the country. I thought the 97 team was much more talented.

Which NC team won without lucky breaks during the season?

yeah luck plays a great deal in winning a championship not to mention going undefeated especially in the SEC that year look how high florida and Arkansas were rated not to mention that week in week out Tennessee played hard core teams...so what if luck was involved and so what if a few wins where close what seprated Tennessee in those games was simple they did not give up and kept playing hard the other teams gave up so yeah that makes Tennessee the better team on that day...and thus the most deserving... call it luck... call it BS... the scoreboard said it all in the end that is what went into the record books...so yeah they where the best team in 1998 simple as that

Notice how Oklahoma teams make up over 10% of the this list. That's impressive

Tennessee was the undefeated National Champion in '98. That's all anybody needs to know. Luck works out equally for everybody. If somebody wants to say Tennessee was lucky to win the title I challenge them to review every game for every other challenger and determine if there was no luck involved in their wins or losses.

The season we beat OSU in the Citrus Bowl, was Fla. our only loss? If so I would like to have seen that team somewhere on that list.

We went undefeated in 98 won the National Championship. How could you say we weren't the best team in 98? It baffles the mind that some Vols fans could ever think we weren't the best that year.

Do we get bonus points for having Jamal Lewis blow his ACL and force us to play half the season with a true freshman at Tailback?

Henry and Stephens were both sophomores but I get your point. Lewis was having an amazing season up to the Auburn game.
