Does anyone else find this disturbing? (Passing game)

I for one am very happy that Debord kept with the running game when it was working. Kept their offense and our defense off the field and gave our OL lots of game reps. We all know the talent we have at WR and we will see it. Just wasn't necessary and I'm glad it wasn't for this game.

I agree, when the run game is working, it's always the first best option.

Three things can happen when you throw the football down the field, and two of them aren't good.

1. incomplete pass
2. pass interception
3. pass completion

Meh. That's not convincing. Four things can happen when you run the ball, and only one of them is good:

1) loss of yards
2) no gain
3) positive yards gained
4) fumble.

Pointing out the options isn't useful. We need to know the relative probabilities, and the relevant gains and losses for each possibility.

agree, and kept our WR core fresh, let Kamara and Kelly get reps, etc. Also think line needed the work in the run protection game more than pass protection, so I see many benefits

Haha I'll admit I've just always been a strong advocate of passing the ball it's just that simple I guess. I think passing the ball is much more fun to watch than running. And I think I've never seen this talented a group of receivers I just think we have to get them the ball and let them run with it

Or just hand the ball to a running back and let THEM run with it. :aggressive:

Oh, you want a legit complaint about the passing game? Dobbs needs to trust the OL more. There were a few times when he left a stable pocket rather than waiting for a receiver to work open.

Minor complaint but I hope he improves so UT can get bigger things in the passing game.

:naughty:You aren't a real football fan much less a true Vol fan if you don't enjoy running for 400 yards...

You missed the point, the running game was working, so why go away from it when your team is averaging over 5 yards per carry?

We did have shots down the field. There were a lot of drops. Butch didn't press the issue. Our WRs need to catch the damn balls thrown to them.

I believe it was more fact control tempo control clock eat up time and keep the defense off the field

My gosh we complain that Kiffin, Chaney and Bajakian dont run the ball enough and now we having a dominate run game finally (hopefully) we complain that we dont pass enough?
Sometimes I think we're the whiniest fanbase.

I'm loving how much we ran it and if we get same results this week I say run it just as much if not more. It will completely open up passing game.
Question is will our defense be good enough that we don't have to try and control the clock

I know that Butch wanted to keep the offense somewhat vanilla Saturday, but with all the sick talent we have at WR and QB how did we not any shots down the field? We should have a wide open passing attack with the guys we are blessed to have. These highly ranked receivers aren't going to want to come to Tennessee if all they do is block the whole game? Do you think well open it up and pass more from here on out? I can just see it now first drive against OU : first play run up the middle stuffed for 1 yard second down: screen for 1 yard. Third and long incomplete pass!!! am i right or do you think butch jones will prove me wrong and sling the ball around in the upcoming weeks?

How do you counter a high tempo offense like BG? You keep their offense off the field. How do you do that, by establishing a dominant running game that eats up clock and yards.

That is what we did. But we also did throw it down field a several times, including a TD that was called back. We had over 600 yards total offense, 200 of which were passing yards. Had we caught those other balls, we probably have 250-300 passing. No complaints from me, or the receivers either.

If you are doing something the defense can't stop you stick with it. We where having our way with BG on the ground so there was no point opening up the passing game.

It's doubtful that the Vols can run the ball that well on Oklahoma, but if they can average over 250 on the ground in SEC play this season, they wil be just fine.

Every great offense starts with a solid running game, then mix in a few big plays in the passing game and you have a potent offense.

No, I didn't. Your post had two claims. First was that the running game was working (and, perhaps separately that you do not move away from something that is working). Your second claim was that passing is risky insofar as only 1/3 options are "successful".

I focused on the second claim. If my comment didn't "track" what you meant in saying it, then you did not make your meaning clear,

Our main strength is rushing the ball, I think more important to establish the run and show Oklahoma that we are going to control the line of scrimmage. It makes our play action passing attack that much more lethal. But hey what do I know other than I'm old school. Run the ball, play defense, and control the clock are all up my alley.
