And how much fun we had with that ? And how that was well believed to be the secret to our NC run?

The internet was still very new and damn it was fun….

And if you happen to have a police scanner, they would pick up neighbors cordless phones lol

It was in the Gridscape days. Message boards were new, and we didn’t have Emoji’s yet. They were called Moodicators. And we had one for Syracuse fans to use - many posters used it throughout the season (1998) for luck and other nefarious purposes…. The internet was different then - people were still very respectful and talked to each other as if the other person was sitting in your office- which we all were because work from home and smartphones didn’t exist. You were on the big PC at your home office or the real office. And we had a six year streak going over bama and were ranked in the top five with sights set on an NC….. (thanks to some big luck in the Syracuse game at the Carrier Dome!)

Yeah, those were the days.

My cousin had a Betty Bearcat and we were living in those apartments behind East Towne Mall in 1996. He'd have it on while we studied as we were both seniors at UT at the time. As we were engrossed in our textbooks, Betty was giving us the audio of a female neighbor on her phone talking with another woman about how her husband was such a jerk for accusing her of cheating on him. Her friend pointed out that she was, and she replied something like, "I know, but that doesn't give him any right to talk to me like that." I wasn't sure if my cousin heard that, but when I looked up over at him, he was grinning.

On another occasion, we listened to a freshman that ended up being a high-profile player on the national championship team telling a young lady about how he got pulled over by the police in Kentucky for speeding on the way down to Knoxville but he didn't get a ticket. Then, during the same call, he was upset because one of the coaches wouldn't let him do his own thing on the field.

Some of us were a little younger in those early days of the internet. The internet proved to be one rude, cruel place that never really improved. I’m glad you got to enjoy it with adults for a short time.

I liked the good old days of the early internet, back when the SEC football message boards were completely unmoderated and full of banter. I'm 49 now and sometimes like to scroll 4chan /pol just for the nostalgic value of the immature, hilarious posts that would cause an immediate permaban on lame forums like reddit.
