Excellent news About the 2011 Signees.

University of Tennessee Athletics: Baseball

Most of the them can play multiple positions, and the class has a combined 5 Tennessee State Titles.

Optimstic for 2012 with a new coach that has proven successful, and for the first time in a long one of their best for signees.

Here's what Serrano said about particular players during his interview on WNML last week:

The only nailed down starting roles are Senior Zach Osborne at SS and Junior Chris Fritts in CF. Senior Chris Pierce will play somewhere, maybe 3B.

He mentioned two freshmen position players likely to see time: Jared Allen in RF and Will
Maddox at 2B.

Catcher still seems open. He praised Junior Wes Walker's work behind the plate and attitude, Sophomore Ethan Bennett's bat, and the work of Jason Manis, a walk-on freshman.

Pitching:
Feels good about the arms he has, not yet sure about their confidence and readiness to compete.

Hopes Junior Drew Steckenrider will earn a spot in the rotation, will try to keep him out of the outfield to save his arm when he's not pitching, maybe will play some 1B.

Sophomore Nick Williams had a "fabulous fall" commanding the zone, has good arm.

Junior RHP Sam Davis, low-80's sidearmer, has impressed for throwing low strikes and getting ground ball outs.

He mentioned three freshmen pitchers whose work ethic may enable them to contribute even though they are a little "green": Eric Martin, Joseph Vanderplas, Conner Stevens.

Didn't mention specific roles for any pitchers other than Steckenrider, and even that was tentative.
