It seems like our D Lineman are fast and athletic, but they do not seem to have any width at all. What do you guys think? It just seems like we are not gonna be able to blow any O lines back when we are outweighed by a pretty significant margin. Thoughts?

It was sad to see Hughes go because of his size but Mo couch and Malik aren't tiny. I think we are going after big guys at DT least.

I thought they've been alright so far, let's see how they do against Bama, LSU, etc. I've been really impressed with Jacques Smith though.

I really liked this play by Malik against UC. (it's at the 1:24 mark or so)

I agree, I think performance has been serviceable so far, but I worry about power running teams like LSU, Bama, and SCar running it down our throats.

I would say they're not deep enough...not necessarily too small.

Were to small to be physically dominant. Still can be effective though if they are gap sound. But it puts heavy pressure on the Lb's though. It means the linebackers must be terrific in their reads and play with great leverage. Force the plays back inside. Not leave backs uncovered out of the backfield. Pretty much all the things our linebackers did not do against UF. -----But ultimately we have to match up with the best teams in the league if we are ever to win it. That's Bama and Florida and LSU. We turn defensive ends into tackles and then we end up with our best ends as small tackles and our backup ends starting! At this point you could argue we have neither. (Malik Jackson would have been great as a full time end the past two years imo.) They recruit NFL defensive linemen across the board. If we are to catch 'em it will be with NFL recruiting. Not by outcoaching them. (obviously!) ------- BTW, we had a coach who managed to NFL recruit for 8 years in a row (94-01). Easy to see what happened when he couldn't anymore.

We always need bigger D linemen IMO. The bigger, faster, and more athletic the better. Besides that, we need more bodies period.

the d-line is holding their own. if we just could tackle better, our defense could be damn near good. the one question i have is, dont get me wrong i think teague is good but why do he always play with his back to the ball. seems to be in good position most of the time and if he turn his head and try to find the ball he could have some picks. i dont know if this is a technique that is taught but it baffles me. do he have any picks since changing over to corner. i thought he was going to bring a reciever mentality to the secondary and attack the ball, guess i was wrong on that one.

Playing the ball in the air is not anyone on our teams' strong suit! If MT (or any other Db's) were to ever read their keys, they would know when to turn and pick the ball off. Playing the ball in flight is an acquired skill. I had high hopes for Teague also. But football must be studied and learned. Practiced and then mastered. It is not a "dumb mans game". Those are Dooleys words. Yet our team misreads plays and misplays the ball all the time. Concurrently, I am not sold on our defensive staffs ability to teach. We don't take on blocks correctly. We don't set the edge on defense, allowing backs to turn the corner and thus gain yards they shouldn't. We 'could' have beat Florida with who we had. But they would have had to play smart football. We can't or or either we just didn't. Both are unacceptable.
