Dobbs won 9 games in ‘16

They go 11-1 with Heupel at the helm. I feel like the A&M game…it was just their day unfortunately. But they are in the SECCG for sure and possibly the playoff.

The 2015 team always gets overshadowed by the 2016 team, but I think 2015 was a better team to watch and a more fun season.

2015 went to 2OT with playoff bound Oklahoma and Heisman winner Baker Mayfield. They also beat a better Georgia team than 2016, and should have beaten a better Florida team than 2016 in the swamp. Plus they went toe to toe with Bama for 4 quarters.

Butch should’ve beat OU, Florida and Arkansas everybody forgets that bad loss to Arkansas at home and they were coming off a loss to Toledo. The 2015 team could’ve easily finished the regular season 11-1 and going to the SEC title game. Thanks Butch

With a dysfunctional team. How many could they have won if everyone stuck together? I think they win at AM, SC & Vandy. They’d played in SEC CG. It’s a shame Jones was such a terrible leader.

Just about d*mn near impossible to win a game when you turn the ball over 7 times.

Don’t you think the lack of concentration was due to the turmoil from the issues (Hurd, etc)?

Still, despite the TOs, Butch had a shot to win in OT from the 1 1/2 yd line but he choked.

We were 5-0 going into that game and maybe there were some cracks developing, but from my experience team/personal strife goes out the window when the game starts. Real competitors shutout the peripheral stuff. It becomes all about the game and making the plays that lead to success.

That's why I said near impossible too. If we had a good coach we would have pulled that game out despite all the turnovers.

Butch lost something like 8 games by 4 points or less and he lost 2 overtime games. The guy just did not have a winning edge.

I’m gonna politely disagree with you. Mental preparation is as important in athletics as the physical preparation & skill. You can’t concentrate when players are quitting, coaches lying to cover it up, etc. There are a few exceptions where teams can succeed thru turmoil, everyone references the Oakland As of the ‘70s, but usually what happened to Tennessee is exactly what happens when teams start coming apart. The team basically melted from within and only the great skill of Dobbs, Kamara & others saved it from a complete disaster, although I could say losing to SC & Vandy is disaster.

Apparently thats one horse that will never be dead enough...

But it would be nice to stop kicking it and creating negativity and animosity.

JMO of course

I don’t mean to disagree, but both Dobbs and Kamara had two lost fumbles in the A&M game. Your train of thought would suggest the off-field issues affected them more than most others on the team.

It was probably the result of those 2 handling the ball on practically every play that game. It was a game where defensive lapses continuously appeared also. My comment about Dobbs & Kamara was about saving the season from a disaster, not that game. Tennessee did beat Ky & Nebraska but was never the team again that beat Va Tech or second half of Fla.

The injuries sustained in the aTm game were crippling. Had to play Bama the next week with a fraction of the team that played in Bristol. I’ll never forget the obvious targeting that knocked Evan Berry out for the season and wasn’t called. That was the end of the career of the best UT kick returner not named Gault. And he was arguably as good.

The similarities, preseason, of 2016 & 2022 are pretty close, IMO. Tennessee returns an outstanding QB, some outstanding RBs (not a Kamara but still good), great WRs & an experience OL. Defensively some questions but an outstanding defender in Banks. Young could be a Barnett.

The major difference is the leadership & culture I believe. Little did we know at this point in 2016 but there was trouble in the program. That prevented that team from being special IMO. I don’t think that exists now. Let’s hope not.

I was there. Evan Berry took the opening kickoff to the house, and we started with a 14-0 lead.

We let Bert come back, and had some massive chokes on offense in the 4th qtr in particular. Maybe Dobbs worst game as a Vol.

And it rained all day. Is there a rule that when Arky plays in Knoxville, that it must be a miserable, soaker of a day?

The door was wide open for us to take control of the division before Kirby got going, and we couldn't do it.

Amen brother! If it wasn't for Josh Dobbs, Butch Jones would have gone down as one of the worst Tennessee coaches EVER! It was the athletes on the field that won under Butch - not a shred of his Head Coaching......
