Dobbs vs Mayfield, Fournette vs Hurd

Our guys will be better in the NFL.

Butch Jones incompetent coaching held them back in college.

Mark my words: In 4-5 years people will wonder how we only won 9 games with the talent we had on the 2015 and 2016 Vols.

Dobbs, Kamara, Hurd, Sutton, Kirkland, Bituli, and Warrior will all be superstars in the NFL.

Kirkland is not a very good LB

I dont hate Hurd. Just that he doesnt possess the same kind of talent as LF. Dobbs and Mayfield? Not even in the same stratosphere. Mayfield is 10x the QB ever wished he could be.

No way, Mayfield reminds me of a ‘Johnny manziel’, won’t equate to the next level.

Rushing records don’t mean anything in college anymore with a 12-13 game schedule and more talented backs jumping to the NFL.

And now, since 2002 bowl games count, derrick henry played 15 freakin games to get his 2000 yards.

Really going out on a limb there.

Jalen Hurd was the worst back in the SEC before the injury to his lady parts.

I will never understand some UT fans' level of denial when it comes to that guy.

Big shock that you’d exaggerate when it comes to Hurd. You Jack wagons never got over him spurning Saban to the point of not taking his calls. :) He wasn’t an all time great, but nowhere near worst back status. You ALMOST get everybody...let it go!

It’s all in the tape. If Hurd continued to run with attitude he could have easily been #1 all time at Tennessee

What? The “worst” back in the SEC. His backup..heck both his backups are better than him, but I don’t think he was anywhere close to the “worst”. Maybe in the few game he did play in 2016. 2015 he was pretty good though. Went for 100 (or nearly) on Bama I believe, not an easy thing to do.

I would easily say he was overrated by many though. Kind of like how it’s easily said, Mark Ingram in the most overrated RB of all time.

Didn't Jalen Hurd run for more yards against the 2015 Bama defense than almost every other RB? I'm sure he ran for more yards than Leonard Fournette.

How can Hurd be the worst RB in the SEC if he ran for more yards than almost every other SEC RB in 2015 against that Bama defense?

2015 Hurd was a great RB. And I'm sure he'll be great at WR or TE once he's at Baylor. The kid is an incredible talent and ridiculously athletic.

It is amazing that we had players on the same level as Baker Mayfield and Fournette on our team in Knoxville and we have jack s88t to show for it.

I'm sure the chess team is killing it, though. Currie can vouch for that.

If you think Hurd will be as successful as Fournette in the NFL, I seriously question your football intelligence.
Also, Baker Mayfield is A LOT better than Dobbs.

Hurd was easily one of the most overrated RBs in Tennessee history. He put up a lot of yards because he ran a lot of plays, but on a per carry basis, he was very mediocre. Not even a top 20 RB all-time at UT IMO. John Kelly and Alvin Kamara are both better backs and we severely underutilized Kamara in favor of the less effective Hurd.

If anything, Hurd is an indictment of Butch Jones' inability to "play the best players" or actually understand the skill-sets of his players. Hurd was a much better receiver than RB.

In 2016, before he quit, he was the worst back in the SEC by any reasonable standard.

He had a place the 2016 vols should have won the east even with all the injured on defense I believe Hurd hurt us in the USC game.

How'd he do in '14 and '16?

2015 Hurd was an okay RB who wasn't as effective or efficient as a starter as he was as a backup the year before. 2016 Hurd was the worst back in the SEC, who got a ton of carries despite being the worst back in the SEC (and bottom 10 in the country).

The guy is an excellent power back who got most of his yards on his own his first two seasons, running behind, first, a TERRIBLE offensive line as a freshman and then a BAD or below average offensive line as a sophomore. That Kamara was underutilized early on, or that the system is meant for backs with quickness, should not take anything away from Hurd. All this talk about Hurd being bad is angry, revisionist nonsense because he quit the team.

As for the OP's original point: Show me a major college team that doesn't have three or four good players, especially in the SEC? Everybody's got them. You need 20 good players to be really good. Kirkland's been hurt for two+ years and otherwise our linebackers were not very good good, and no depth, and last year our corners other than Sutton were not good, and our lines were mediocre. A lot of the fans here are living in la-la land. We had a bunch of people this year who thought we should roll through the league with all of our talent. A joke. We had brand new QBs and WRs--zero experience. I agree that the coaching has been crap--we completely choked away the Florida and Kentucky games--but let's dispense with this notion that we are a hugely talented team.

Never seen a great CFB RB average 4.7 ypc ... maybe you're using a different standard for "great"
