Dobbs- the Last True VFL QB?

"Vol For Life was the brainchild of Derek Dooley. Hired to replace Lane Kiffin in 2010, the new Tennessee coach knew his football team needed a program that taught life skills, one that looked after players and helped them prepare for life after football.

'What we were trying to say at that time,' Davis said, 'was once you're a Vol, you're a Vol For Life. We're not turning our backs on you once you've given us your four years.

'We're going to stick with you, try to help you become a successful young man beyond your time at Tennessee. It's not about the next four years, it's about the next 40 years."

Nah, the players started it by hosting a tailgate annually before the Orange & White game in the early Dooley years - then Dooley and the University co-opted it.

Dobbs’ annual charity golf tournament and concert event is an accepted extension of that.

The closest thing to objective criteria I’ve heard are: 1. that it is limited to players and ex-players, and 2. if your teammates would call you one, then you are one.
Obviously there are dueling narratives; the official line, and collective memory of those involved. 🤷🏻‍♂️

JG spent 5 years on the Hill, got a degree, had to play for a bunch of bozos as coaches and took some of the biggest hits a vol qb have ever taken. It’s not his fault that our coaches couldn’t find someone better than him from 2017-2020. Went to WSU for his extra covid year as he knew he wasn’t going to play for UT his final year. Don’t begrudge him that.

Also Hendon raised this program to heights not seen since the 90s and Milton stuck around as a backup in 22 eventually leading us to our biggest bowl win since 98.

All 3 are VFL in my book.

He finished at Washington St.

Thank God

Our 2021 season wasn't great but by God we were objectively the most entertaining team/fanbase in the country that year lol.

Once we realized we were in good hands with Hooker under center we started becoming Tennessee again A little weird, a bit obnoxious, and always loud. Mustard and golf balls for everyone courtesy of the Vols.

Truth , if JG isn’t a VFL then I don’t know who is

Maybe we need an annual VN vote to select VFLs.
Great idea. Perhaps the moderator should appoint a Study Group comprised of as many stakeholders as possible, tasked with the responsibility to develop appropriate guidelines for being designated a VFL. The Group could then nominate a list of candidates to be voted on by Vol Nation.

I think where they started is irrelevent. Hooker is one of the best to ever suit up for us and no one can deny whether or not Milton is VFL considering he was on campus as long as Heath Shuler (3 years) or many others who went pro early.

All day long. Hooker is a legend and Milton lost his job, rode the pine, came back and had two pretty decent seasons despite the criticism that he gets.

Got his degree and played 5 years at TN. No one here is really qualified to decide who gets to be a VFL or whatever, unless you were on the team. This type of discussion is silly and disrespectful to the players in my view.

So according to this topic, Miles Kitzelman doesn't deserve to be called VFL. He's a Bammer like Pruitt or something?

Miles Kitzelman isn’t a QB either, so no, he can’t be a VFL QB

And Milton played great in the Orange Bowl against Clemson

Correct. He and Nico had pretty much the same stats the past two seasons. Biggest difference? The defense and run game wasn’t as developed when Milton was the QB. If Joey “Ag-uh-lar” (as the SportsSource guys say) throws for 2700 yards, 20 TDs and 5 INTs this season I’d say that may get us back into the playoff. Milton was a good quarterback.

Yes, he was"good" just not great. He's not the reason we lost 4 games in 2023. He put us into position to win 2 of those games and our defense let us down, specifically at LB.

Milton was the furthest thing from good. If a guy with his arm and his measurables were even remotely good in college, there is zero chance he falls to the 6th round.

I disagree. Unfair assessment; particularly the verbiage used--"furthest thing from good". If he weren't good he wouldn't have even been drafted. He wasn't great, he wasn't Manning, Dobbs, Hooker or Clausen--but he was a good QB and had the defense and running game been where it was last season, we likely would've gotten ten wins with Milton as the QB.

The only reason we won 8 with Milton was because the running game was good and the defensive line dominated a couple of games. He was horrible in all of our losses and just as bad in a few of our wins.

He was drafted because he can throw it far and looks like he came from central casting. Not because he was ever good.

He did put up some monster numbers…. And he wasn’t going to be denied against Bama
