Dobbs is playing right now.

I honestly believe Dobbs could be a great qb. Going later in the draft like he did a team could’ve gotten a great qb on a cheap 5 year rookie deal. Seattle did it with Wilson and Dallas has done it with dak. Dobbs could be better than dak is given the opportunity.

How did Dobbs look? I tuned in during the 2nd half and Dobbs was already out.

He was ok. Threw a pick that was called back and got sacked a couple of times. Had a really nice deep throw and long run. Converted a third and long on a nice pass to Washington. Almost hit him again on the side of the end zone for a TD, but one of Washington’s feet was on the sideline.

I hope so, but the media thinks Mason Rudolph is the QB in waiting.

Rudolph played well, too. At a minimum, Dobbs should be set up for a beneficial trade to a better situation.

If Dobbs and Rudolph continue to play well (and yes, it is early), the Steelers will be in an interesting situation. I really can’t see them wanting to cut either QB and getting nothing in return. They likely will roll with both QBs, especially since they control both for awhile.

I know that most of you fellas don't care for the cackalacky Panthers, but as an understudy of Cam Newton's, JD could pick up their offense really quick and go in whenever needed. I don't see that many years left for Cam and the Panther's offense is far more friendly to JD's tool set than the Steelers'.

Rudolph outplayed Dobbs 2 to 1. Dobbs looked good, but Rudolph threw for like 200 yards and 2 TD’s
Nope. Rudolph looked solid, but he was 5 of 8 for 91 yards (not 200); Dobbs was 5 of 8 for 85 yards, but had a 36 yard run. Two touchdowns for Rudolph; Josh had a perfect throw in the corner of the end zone, but Washington missed getting his toe down by inches. The int that was called back was underthrown by Josh, but the 3rd and 21 pass was beautiful. Also worth mentioning that Dobbs drives started from his own 7 and his own 17, and dumb penalties hampered both drives.

Dobbs would be a good fit for the Panthers with all the speed the Panthers finally have. But with Grier getting that 3rd round pick, I think they are banking on him being next in line.

Rudolph looks better in the pocket, but Dobbs gives that intangible of using his legs.

Total yds:

Dobbs: 85 + 44 = 129

Rudolph: 91 + 0 = 99

Hodges: 79 - 2 = 77

comparing preseason stats is silly because its not apples to apples. What u wanna see is who got first and second team snaps and who got third team snaps. Also which defense were they facing? First preseason game you normally have your first team play the first quarter second team second quarter and second half u start bringing in the rest of the guys. Dobbs played 1 quarter with and against mostly starters Rudolf played 2nd and most of the 3rd quarter mostly with and against 2nd and third stringers. Given that information one would assume at least going into the game Dobbs was seen as the more reliable QB. The fact he has comparable if not superior numbers in less time against more talent says something.

Game 3 and 4 will be more indicative of whats really going on though. Where it gets really interesting is when you look at salary cap implications. Both of them have fairly similar salaries but Mason has one more year on his contract and carried a higher cap hit and creates more dead cap if cut. Its not a huge amount but 3-500k could make the difference in signing someone or not. So basically if it comes down to them performing in the same zip code Dobbs will be the odd man out because cutting him creates less dead cap space and their cap hits are almost the same and Rudolf has an extra year on his contract. Kinda sucky for Josh but the fact he is putting up similar passing numbers and offers the other dimension of the legs creates its own value because they wouldn't have to change the offense much if at all when big Ben goes down for a few games like he does every year.
