I'm 15 and I respect Fulmer more than anyone that I've had the privilege of watching since I've been alive. He did great things for this university and I grew up on Fulmer football. While I agree that it was time for a change I don't think he should have his name tarnished for what happened in his final years. And I support Kiffin 100% and I think we are going in the right direction.

Nicely stated. It's a shame that a 15 year old is able to display more maturity and reason than many others in VN. If some of you want to be upset with the fact that Fulmer stayed a few years too long and the money "he took" from UT, then you may want to direct that anger to the AD and others running the university who actually made those decisions.

This is a horrible comparison. If we had played in either of those conferences Phil would have had more titles than both of them combined. Go Kiffin and go Vols!!!

In case anyone is wondering, this is the definition of "conjecture."

Even the Big Ten and ACC had some better coaches than DiNardo, Goff, Donnan, Scott, DuBose, Mumme, etc.

Sure; keep believing that. Who beat UT in the 2007 Outback Bowl?

One win over a SEC school doesnt mean that you have a stronger conference year end and year out, does it??You seem to be a pretty sharp fellow, tell me you dont believe that!

I sure hope you're not basing that off of UT's performance against the ACC in Peach Bowls earlier this decade.

So even though Fulmer lost to Paterno when their teams actually played each other, he would unquestionably have won more Big Ten championships than Paterno has this decade? That's the definition of sound logic, I swear...

I am guessing it is the younger generation who lacks the respect for Fulmer because they didn't see first hand what he did with the mess Majors left.

Fulmer got what he deserved... Should have been fired several years ago.
Majors did not leave a mess. He left some very talented players.Fulmer stabbed him in the back to get the HC job. IMO it was a digrace the way Majors was treated.

It is great seeing Johnny Majors around UT football again.

See post above.

The SEC hasn't always been the strongest conference my young friend. Remember some of the coaching legends Stay Puft padded his record with? The rest of the league has become much stronger over the past 7-8 years. Ironically, it coincides with our downfall. Hmmmm....

I do think it was time for Fulmer to go. The "Peyton years" were good. The top recruits want to come and play on the same team with Peyton. Vols had good teams for a bit in the 90s. Other than that...Fulmer's teams were average with some great players carrying the load.

My dislike for Fulmer started in watching the way he acted when fired. If he truly loved UT he would have acted differently....(IMO). When I found out about his office and desk, that confirmed for me my antipathy. His desk was raised up on a platform and when people came to his office, he was looking down on them.

And what about those of us who hear about his supposed "loyalty" and then read his various comments about how Lane Kiffin talks too much, how Fulmer would have gotten Marlon Brown and how he shouldn't have been fired at all?

If you love Tennessee, you love Tennessee. You don't take shots at it every chance you get...especially when you're wrong and they just paid you anyway.

im just saying its not fair to compare conference titles unless your talking about coaches and teams in the same conference. Im sure some coach out there has a couple of WAC titles, and I guess that person would be a better coach than Fulmer too??

No, but it certainly shoots a hole in your baseless assertion that, "If we had played in either of those conferences Phil would have had more titles than both of them combined”.

If WAC teams kept beating us, then sure...

PSU also doesn't have close to the amount of talent, over the last decade, that UT was able to pull in. As per Rivals, since 2002:

PSU:
***** - 5
**** - 45

UT:
***** - 17
**** - 67

At the end of the season yes. Would you agree that its tougher to get through a regular season in the SEC without injuries. Even without injuries the players have been beat down , would you agree??

Exactly. Given teams of comparable ability, Fulmer loses more often than not to almost any major conference coach.

It came up in response to this \/ and thus is a valid comparison.

At least TN didn't do a Joe Pa or Bowden and keep him 20 years too long.

You willing to definitively state that that makes the difference between 5-7 (Fulmer) and 11-1 or 10-2 (Big Ten champion)? You think the SEC is THAT much tougher?

Have you not learned anything in this "debate"? :banghead2:

It doesn't mean squat if you want him to be successful or not. He will never get a big enough job to be relevant again anyway. Power programs aren't interested in 60 year old retreads.

Except that Rivals doesn't tell you about how our 3rd-ranked Class of 2007 will have 12-14 of its 31 players remaining in 2010 (and 1 of 5-6 ***** players), which would have been their senior season without redshirt. This has happened in other classes as well, and some (like 2008) just sucked to begin with. Our talent isn't at the level that a look at Rivals would lead you to believe.
