Do you think Kiffin and co. can make Cropmton into a decent QB next year?

I'm just saying it is a bit premature to say Meachem >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Brown. No one here knows this. We do know that Meachem had only 1 good year, was injury prone, and couldn't learn the play book.

Other way around. It is premature to compare Marlon Brown to Robert Meachem when Meachem ran a 4.38 (irrelevant but impressive), and had 1298 yards and 11 TDs in a season. I don't think anyone else in Tennessee history has done that, and there is no reason to assume that Marlon Brown will.

This may have been said already, but Cromp didn't look all that bad two years ago against LSU and Arky. If he has the right coaching, perhaps he can be workable.

Crompton is done at UT unless Stephens, Coleman, and G. Jones (yea, that's right) all go down with injuries. Then, I'd like to see what Vladimir Richard or Rico McCoy could do before trying JC again.

I'd consider using JC as the holder since he should have plenty of time to practice with the kicking team.

Nothing personal.... it's just that we've been there and done that. JC must have looked good in practice, so I wouldn't count on that transferring to the game if I was the new coach. just saying...

true jc was awful last year but the other weren't much better if at all. i think he can do some good in an actual system not one where nobody knows whats going on at all

One of the other two would be getting some valuable playing time to be ready in case something happens to the QB in 2010.

Our 2010 QB has to finish high school next year.

Everyone puts so much stock into a 2010 QB that hasn't even committed yet. Kiffin cannot and will not decide on a QB under the assumption that we will have a better one next year. At the same time, I don't see him picking Coleman or Stephens just because they are younger. They would have to be very close to Crompton for age to become a factor. If Crompton is better, I believe he will play. And Crompton is probably the most talented QB we have--it just comes down to his reads and mental errors. We don't really know anything right now, and before spring practice, even Kiffin can't be really sure. Crompton has a chance, and a pretty good one.

It could be that Crompton was overwhelmed with 'Claw' thoughts.

I think CLK will give him a 'fair' chance at the position and will play whoever he thinks gives the Vols the best chance of winning. I'm just less sure, perhaps, that JC can beat out both Stephens and Coleman.

Nothing would make me happier than to see the 5* play up to the expectations we all had for him when he started. And, it would be a better Cinderella story than the one with EA and Cut.

I'd like to win games in 2009, but I'm more interested in seeing the groundwork being laid for championships in the years beyond.

I couldn't agree more. I wouldn't relish another losing season, but I can swallow my pride better if the groundwork is in place for SEC and National Championships in the coming years. In my opinion, it says more about our current coaches if they can develop the assets that JC was perceived to have when he came to UT. Imagine what they could do for a freshman coming in next year or a Coleman.

I think Crompton will be the starter and will actually shock everyone. He won't be a star, but his transformation from this past year to this year will be a testament to this coaching staff.
And when we lose to Florida in 2010 because we're training a new quarterback, because we played Crompton in 2009 so we could win the Music City Bowl, that would be a testament to this coaching staff, too.

A testament to its stupidity, that is.

It's time to turn the page. We aren't going to win the SEC in 2009 no matter what we do. I'd rather build toward that goal, than play a mediocre senior to win another game or two in a season that's not going anywhere we want to go.

I said it in a different thread........

Crompton has a very good year. Not All SEC...but a very good year. He seems to fit CLK's system. 3-5 step drop, easy reads, get rid of the ball. He will be the biggest suprise of 09-10 for UT. JMO!

I agree. I spent some time with cromp this weekend, we threw a little bit. The arm strength and physical abilities were there.

Well, maybe that accounts for it, because, I saw how JC threw the ball in the O&W last year (I know it aint real SEC game situation) and predicted he was gonna have a great year.

I am not gonna predict any more.

I think Crompton has potential, no one can dispute that he has a good arm. If the coaches can get his head to fall in line with his arm I think he can do something. I agree with the thoughts that Clawson's system was confusing. Also, with the Offensive line struggles last year, it was hard for anyone under center to accomplish a whole lot.

I am also eager to see what BJ Coleman can do. I think alot of people are freaking out about the QB situation way too much.

Crompton will start the whole year. He has the most talent but needs coaching and confidence. Kiff is not gonna mess up our chances at landing an elite 2010 QB by starting an underclassman like Coleman.
