Several Points:
1. If Arnett's father has gotten worse than his original state when Arnett signed with us in February, then yes, I would let him go. If he has not gotten worse, then I see no more reason for DeAnthony to be able to go then he would have had in february. DeAnthony cannot transfer until after the school year. His LOI states he must stay one full school year.
2. If his father is not in a worse situation, DeAnthony should not be allowed to play at either Michigan or Michigan State unless losing a year of eligibility at the very least. A LOI does not mean you can stay for one year and then do whatever you please. He made a commitment, and you cannot bail out on your school and use a sick father as a copout.
3. If Dooley does let DeAnthony go (which he undoubtedly will have to), then it should be reported by Dooley that his father truly was in a worse medical state then he was in February when DeAnthony signed on, and that he will be allowed to play at any institution he chooses.
4. However, if Dooley lets him go despite the fact that his father is not in a worse state, then it should be reported that DeAnthony desired to go home to be with his family, though his father's health has not dramatically decreased, and that because of that decision, he will not be allowed to play at the University of Michigan or Michigan State University.
5. We have to be careful about passing judgment in this situation. A situation similar to this got us Alex Bullard. Luckily, Notre Dame did not hold it against us and tell him he could not transfer to us. However, to me, I feel like the key is has DeAnthony's father's health taken such a turn for the worse that it would be imperative for Arnett to be there in case he does not live any longer. Or, has his father's health just became more dehabilitating and not more life threatening. Big difference.
Just my thoughts. Dooley can't just teach commitment and team and cut someone loose just because they wanna leave.
