Remind me what OK did to Texas A&M that year.

Remind me what we did to Texas A&M that year with our back-up QB.

It was delicious USC got stripped of the '04 crown during this thread. Delicious.

So you're going to add the transitive property to your repertoire? :post-4-1090547912:

Don't see any reason why Fulmer couldn't have won 9 -- Auburn and UCLA were certainly winnable games. Plus, Fulmer's record shows that he had a knack for bouncing back with decent-to-good years after down years.

With that said, I think just about everyone agrees/d that 9 win seasons weren't good enough for Tennessee football, so Fulmer had to go, and that's OK! It was definitely time to move on. We deserve the best and we weren't getting it. No reason to trash the man -- if you do, as I've said in the past, you are no better than a Gator or Bammer. Have some loyalty and be proud of the fact that the man brought the biggest trophy in the land to UT and back-to-back SEC titles. It's funny to me that for some people on here a few bad years somehow erases that. If we bring in a new coach every 10 years and that coach wins one national championship during his tenure, how many national championships will we have by the time you are 6 feet under? If CDD can bring us anywhere close to the success that CPF brought us, I will be a happy man, even if we have to endure a few disappointing seasons here and there.

There's a general consensus that Fulmer was simply not pulling in the top talent the last several years of his tenure. Some attribute it to laziness; some say the sexy spread offenses that exploded on the scene lured top offensive talent away (the game passed him by). There's probably lots of truth in both of those statements, but the last couple of years have been pretty revealing in terms of how coaches are getting that top talent and I think Fulmer was either unable or unwilling to play that game and quickly fell by the wayside as a result. I'm kind of glad -- would rather see him go b/c he can't beat FL consistently than b/c he allowed a culture like that at Ohio St or USC to exist or b/c he got in bed with the likes of a Cam Newton. No one ever accused Fulmer of recruiting choir boys, but I don't believe anyone ever accused him of paying them either. Ask Albert Means.

GBO!

Two things...
during CPF's first seven-eight years Tennessee won on the raw talent that (primarily) he, CDC, and CRG recruited to Tennessee. The sidelines is where CPF's achilles heal came to be exposed...out-coached by his opponent on too many occasions...
segue to-
it's not that winning 9 gms is not enough, as much as it is the fact of who CPF could not beat or consistently defeat---SEC foes a la the Alabama's, Auburn's, Georgia (post Donnan & Goff), Florida's, etc.
Then too, there was the loss to Vanderbilt. Ouch! Certainly did not help his case / defense.
It was time...change was inevitable.

True. However, when the talent is equal, coaching ability is a bigger factor.

What current (and second time around) SEC HC was/is known to say, "...keep it (score) close, the pressure will get to them, they'll fold in the second half..."? Hint: Likes golf (The Reserve) and goes by the nickname---the ol' ball coach.

Nobody is disrespecting him, simply stating facts. CPF's tyranny had lasted far too long. He became complacent, he quit developing the talent he managed to bring in, and he started getting dominated by competent coaches.
