From Todd in Palm Beach, Fla.: Earl [Bennett] is a fantastic representative for Vanderbilt University. This alumni is very proud to watch him play. Vanderbilt is now a legitimate contender, and I am not just talking about a bowl game. They can beat anyone they play. Watch out for Vandy to win several big games this year and contend Florida for the SEC East.

Vanderbilt has exactly the same chance of winning the SEC this year that Cal does of winning the PAC 10.

Vandy most likely will have 4 or 5 wins tops.

Even with a future NFL Quarterback and their rival UT having its worst year in 20 years, they only managed to get 5 wins.

I won't shed any tears however if Vanderbilt does compete with Florida for 5th place in the SEC East.

I agree Vandy is getting better under Johnson, they beat Georgia last season and UT in 2005.

But they haven't been to a bowl game in years, to say they are ready to compete for the SEC East is laughable.

As a Vandy alum myself, it is disappointing so see such ill-placed optimism among the soon to be disappointed fans of the program.

When Vandy hired Dinardo, they were supposed to be on the verge of being a contender; through Woody and Dowhower, they were knocking on the door of being competitive in the SEC; now with Johnson, they are barely on the outside looking in, just a break or two away from standing with the big boys. This is yet another verse of a song that should have ended years ago.

It is also disappointing to see a Vandy man who doesn't know that "alumni" is plural; maybe the guy went to Lipscomb and is posing.

Don't feel bad, Oski. That's more of a comment on USC's strength than it is on Cal's ineptitude.

Vandy has what at least like 3 (4 if include the sec championship game) games they need to win as an underdog. Cal has one, which happens to be at home. Even if you assume SC is massively superior, I'd say Cal has a much better chance. Particurally if you realize that if cal didn't crap out against AZ we would have won the pac-10 outright last season without having to beat SC.

I keep hearing that he has the dores moving in the right direction, but what has he done that Dinardo, Woody, and Dowhower didn't? He has several close losses, a couple of upsets over the worst UT and UGA teams in my lifetime, some horrible losses, and a program that finishes its season before the Thanksgiving leftovers are gone every year.

The guy may be a football genius, but it looks to me like he has taken Vandy football to exactly the level it has occupied since Reagan was president.

beating UGA and TN, regardless of teh down year, was a crowning acheivment for him and Vandy.

I think Johnson is the perfect coach for Vandy. He looks just like Steve Martin and Vandy fans something to smile about.

Johnson is a fine coach...I'm still not so certain he's any better than the previous 5 Vandy coaches before him.

His greatest team was the 5-6 squad that choked on a 4-0 start to the season.

I think Woody was the best football coach that Vandy's had in 50 years...Woody Widenhofer was the only D1 coach in the country who thought enough of Cutler to give him a scholarship....Woody's defenses were consistently ranked among the top 10-20 overall in the country. He turned Vandy into a factory for NFL caliber linebackers. He just couldn't find a way to get production out of his offenses.

I still think, that if Widenhofer would have been D-coordinator on Dinardo's last few Vanderbilt teams, the 'Dores would have been to a bowl game or two. Gerry's teams were just the opposite of Woody's...they could score, they just couldn't stop opponents. Dinardo's I-bone, and Woody's defense may have produced 6 or 7 wins at Vandy.

Yes, but considering the UT and UGA teams he beat, what kind of crown is it? Woody beat South Carolina, Dinardo beat Ole Miss and Georgia, and Dowhower combined with Dinardo to beat UK 5 years in a row. Johnson has also lost to Rutgers (the 2004 version,) and is a combined 0-4 against Navy and MTSU.

I still fail to see how beating the conference dregs and occasionally one of the big boys when they are down is a step up for Vandy. Winning a couple of conference games, loosing to somebody embarrassing, and playing a couple of quality teams close only to find heartbreak in the end is nothing new in Nashville. Vanderbilt has been doing that for years.

For Vandy beating UT and GA was impressive, I don't think it matters how down they were.

They were always able to beat Vandy until Johnson came along.
