We claim to have 6. But only four (1938, 1950, 1951, and 1998) were recognized by major polls. Reason i ask is bc i was looking at a nice UT leather jacket but the jacket only recognizes 4 NC's on it.......:dunno:

I have had this debate with an Alabama fan 50 times. They claim to have a few "questionable" National Championships too. So I say if they can count theres, we can count our 6!

I've had the same debate with bammers. If we are going to make fun of them for claiming questionable MNCs, then we are hypocrites if we do the same.

Let's see here.

Tennessee claims 6 national championships. However, the 1940 and 1967 national championships are about as legit as a gangster telling you that he'll have your back.

4 national championships is generally the accepted number for most national college football fans, when talking about Tennessee. The 1938 and 1950 titles, although not selected by a major poll, are generally recognized.

However, Tennessee could claim up to 14, if they wanted to.

The only years we were recognized by the AP or the coach's poll was 1951 and 1998, so we have 2 legit MNCs.

so then do we basically only have 2 since they r recognized by the ap and coaches? i mean wut do we go by? granted those polls r the major ones but do the other 4 not really count?

Depends on what your criteria for a "national championship" is. If you just want to do AP/Coaches/BCS poll, then yes, Tennessee only has 2. This still places us in the top 10 for consensus national championships.

goin by that site bama can claim 25 national championships

Yep. So can Notre Dame.

However, I know who most of those pollsters/ratings are. The "Annual Football Predictions" selector is nothing more than a bunch of older gentlemen from MTSU who convene every year to select their national champion. Same type of case with a lot of polls on there.

Holy Crap!
That's 64 years right there...

By that site, Florida is but a mere blip on the radar.

Let them claim what they want, they are going to be a great team this year and all we can do is prepare for the impact.Hopefully Crompton will have a light bulb over his head when the third Saturday in October gets here...

And we hate Fulmer for bringing one after 47 years.
Speaking of which, lets see how long it takes us to get another one.I'm not defending Fulmer, but in his time he did produce a NC,regardless of how the hell it happened.

I pray that this new era will produce what it will take to get us to that level once again.
