Do any college teams run the Tampa 2

To my knowledge any team that runs a 4-3 with 2 corners and 2 safeties runs a version of the Tampa 2. It places a premium on speed, so the D-line is usually on the small side, and the linebackers need to have enough speed to cover receivers since they are responsible for the zone 10 yards back from the LOS and between the corners. The corners have to have above average cover skills and the safeties must be good at run support. Simple but very effective.

I think the Vols base D is pretty similar.

Our D should be pretty effective and easily adaptive to Monte. That's good.

If I understand it cover two has nothing to do with personnel. It's all about halving the deep zone(one safety to each side of the field) with the middle linebacker dropping deep down the middle and everyone else playing a short zone. Technically you can run it with a 3/4. It's more of a philosophy than a grouping of players. If you watch Dungy's in Indy they never blitz, but if you watch Tampa Bay's they actually blitz and zone blitz occasionally. As long as the short zones/deepmiddle/halved safties are there it's cover two.

I know Purdue ran cover 2 and it was effective with a pretty thin talent pool. I'm not knowledgeable enough to break down all the finite x and o details, but what I do know is that the version they ran counted on pressuring the quarterback and the back field. Then the safeties make noise in the secondary and capitalize on rushed passes. The most important factor in that defense was speed over size, and since they were not a powerhouse school they were not going to consistently get guys with both speed and size. However, with that limited talent (they would have maybe one or two NFL calibur guys on the defense) they were able to be close to the top of the Big Ten in defense every year in the late nineties and early 2000's.

With Tennessee having a good recruiting base to get those guys, and with Kiffin's "Tampa 2", I really think the Vol Defense has the potential to be legendary. The only downside will be that some cover 2 styles are "bend but don't break," and after watching soft defenses for so long, I'm not sure if the Vol fan base will handle that very well.

Hopefully, Monte K makes some adjustments to it soon---his D's have been getting slammed the last few weeks at TB.
