DICE and Visceral will create new Star Wars games as part of a deal between Electronic Arts and Disney. The two companies today announced a multi-year arrangement for the exclusive license to make Star Wars games for a "core gaming audience."

The projects will span platforms and genres, with Disney retaining rights to mobile, social, and certain online categories. Star Wars: The Old Republic is already an active collaboration between the two companies, and EA Labels President Frank Gibeau said gamers can expect plenty more.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” Gibeau said in a press release. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

The news follows a month after Disney shuttered LucasArts, when it made clear its intentions to contract out game development for the beloved sci-fi series.

“This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come,” Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants said. “Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.”

Update

According to DICE’s Frostbite Technical Editor, the Star Wars games in development at DICE and Visceral will be built on the Frostbite 3 engine, the same engine powering the upcoming Battlefield 4.

Sounds like a typical EA franchise, the Star Wars name sells itself with minimal effort put in on the development end.

EA understands that as much as people hem and haw about voting with their wallets, 85% won't actually do it.

But listen to this. What if, now stay with me, what if a simple cheat code would enable playing NCAA football with Star Wars characters?!?! Can you imagine!! It's a possibility now!!!

But seriously, this isn't really a surprise.

A battlefield: Star Wars would be pretty interesting. Hope they have a wookie class

All the ewoks would camp in trees.

Seriously, though, I could do without Battlefield venturing back into making a distant future based game.

While I understand everyone's intial reaction to this, I am at least encouraged when I see names like DICE and Bioware attached to it. If you remember, Bioware (Mass Effect series) was also the developer who made Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the original Xbox. IMO that was the last truly great Star Wars game. Plus I have a feeling that DICE could make a killer Battlefront game!
