I'd call this "disappointing"...

But then again...Tennessee has seen MORE of this than the other the last 5 years (including TWICE under Butch)...yet the "Candy" jokes persist here?

I'm disappointed in Butch's on-field decisions, clock miss-management and play calling in key times (aTm offensive play calling I witnessed, with the game on the line, from the stands of Kyle Field in person). Anyone NOT disappointed in some/all of these...is delusional!

So were you disappointed with these games also ?

Nah. I don't want Butch to fail.

I actually want us all to be on the same page about our coach the way Bama fans are about Saban or the way FSU fans are about Jimbo.

Trust me, I dream of a world where Butch makes all the haters (myself included) eat crow and just plain out-coaches the HC's he goes up against. He calls ballsy plays consistently, doesn't let off the gas, and gets praised for his on-the-field ability.

I would love nothing more than to go into games thinking "At least we know we have a better Head Coach than them." Even if we lose, it would be great to not think we lost due to coaching.

I just don't see any of that happening when you're in your 4th year, and your team is capable of losing to Derek Mason's Vanderbilt. I would love to be proven otherwise.

I never trust anyone who says "trust me". Go back to your Alabama friends. Time to put you on ignore. Tired of the SOS.

Butch is a career 8 win coach, so 2017 shouldn't have been a disappointment. Butch will probably win 7-9 games a year on a consistent basis with an occasional 5 win season along with an occasional 10 win season. I don't think he will ever compete for the conference championship here (actually playing in Atlanta in December). He will recruit well and bring in quality kids who stay out of trouble and represent the University with class.

The huge majority of media folks who were there were extremely complimentary of CBJ. You, in your never ending world to find fault with all things related to him, find one nugget (and it's a ridiculous nugget really) to point out. is the glass in your world alweays half emopty?

Sometimes a parent does not tell a kid that they are disappointed in them, even when they are. Sometimes you have to let the kid set their bar. I don't think a good coach will publicly tell the team that he was disappointed in them. Privately he may tell them that they let some opportunities slip away.

To say last year wasn't a disappointment is completely insane. But it's just coach speak I suppose

Anyone actually listen to the interview? I thought he was pretty real. Said it wasn't a disappointment but didn't achieve some of their goals. What's he supposed to say. Guys battled thru ton of injuries, and still won 9 games, though there was certainly games we shouldn't have lost.

I think people are pissed he didn't give us a "Butch gem quote", so they are picking the fly sh.t out of the pepper. Even Booger, who killed him in morning sessions said he aced the presser.

Everybody was disappointed. Why not admit it and move on? Why not say the whole team was disappointed that all the injuries kept us from accomplishing everything we'd hoped, but we're healthy now and ready to prove some things this year.

It was a good interview.

Sometimes good leaders, great leaders don't need to verbally say things that are already understood. What would be the point of ridiculing the kids in the program? So a few reporters and some fans can get their jollies off and talk about how bad of a coach he is. When you set an expectation on your job or at home, and those expectations are not met, no need to verbally say that you are disappointed. The people that pay attention to you, will know that you are disappointed.

Were you disappointed that Butch was able to re-juvinate a decimated defense that whipped Nebraska and held them to 61 yards rushing? I think that the return of our best defense players along with a strong offensive line will give the Vols a much better chance at success than most of the media, and many other critics, give them.

My guess is he factors in the injuries and such before he grades accomplishments and/or he gives extra credit for beatin those darn gators!

I also hope Jones succeeds at UT. I also just don't see it happening. He is simply too arrogant to allow his "new assistants" to actually do things the right way. He is so enamored with his MAC offense that he will not adapt to the SEC. I'll eat the crow if he proves me wrong! GO BIG ORANGE!

I wonder how many of his new coaches are meek followers needed for a head coach like Jones is portrayed to be. Seems to me they have be "head strong" types too. Could he be giving in and seeing the light just a little? As for his "sorry" offense, it looked pretty good last year. Scored lots of points, now if the defense had just been a little more like we are use to......

From the "general" on, what you lay out seems to me to be the way our team has preformed. The big difference over most squads and Butch's is the a part of the last sentence. His time here seems to show better results on maturity, behavior and grades than most others have gotten from their guys.

If I'm a youngster laying it on the line year round these days to play for football championships and the season ends without a championship, yes, I'm disappointed. I'm with Vickers here. CBJ is a coach and has to view and promote the program from that perspective. "We sucked" and walking around in sackcloth and ashes would not be doing his job correctly, which is what and how some here on VN want him to promote our program and his coaching.

More of the quote for context:

"I don't view it as a disappointment. The way I view it is we didn't accomplish everything we set ourselves out to. And, again, our goal every year is to win a championship and compete to win a championship. So, was it a disappointment? No. Did we not accomplish some of the things we set out to do? Absolutely. We have to learn from the things that went wrong that we could have done better."

Also:

"...just four and a half years ago where our program was facing the potential APR penalty, and now that's a thing of the past with a 972, second year in a row that we'll graduate 100 percent of our seniors in our program. We have 67 players on this year's football team that has a 3.0 or above. And on the last two bowl wins, we've had 26 college graduates participate in those bowl games. And then on the field, we're very proud of the fact that it's very, very difficult to win in the Southeastern Conference, and we're one of only three programs that have won nine games two years in a row. We've been very fortunate to have three straight bowl victories, first time in 20 years in our great program's history and tradition, but there's so much more out there. There's so much more out there to be accomplished, and we've only started."

Players vs. Coaches..........ya think they might have different opinions about performance? Coach Jones looks at the overall performance, he's entitled to look at the Lemon Aid vs. the Lemons..........like some of the posters here

Youre going to blame CBJ and his play calling for a loss in which we had nearly 700 yards of offense and 7 turnovers (5 lost fumbles). I think your beef is with the wrong guy on that one. Makes 0 sense.
