Disappointed in some fans

If two wrongs don't make a right then the rest of your post is irrelevant.

This isn't a "they are worse than us", it's about acting like a grown up. That kind of talk itself is rather childish, as it sounds like a bunch of 4th graders telling the teacher "they hit me first!"

Every base has its group of fans that do things we do not approve of. Just because I repeat what I saw in Gainesville during the 3 trips on game days doesn't mean I have a juvenile mentality.

Repeating what you saw doesn't, but you clearly were portraying a "they've done worse" narrative, and that is what is juvenille. Which is why I said the rest of your post is irrelevant if we're discussing the principle.

Save the preaching for the pulpit.

The night before the Ar game one year the students camping out for tickets were throwing stuff at us every time we drove by yelling "Go Vols!". What's their problem?

To be honest they weren't ready the first time, not really the second time either, that third time they figured out we were going to keep doing it until they made us stop. It was a company car so no biggie.

Throwing change at us was enough.

For some reason I wasn't in a bad mood after last night, oh wait WE WON!

Plan A.

See y'all in Tampa!

We parked at the Civic with intention on riding the KAT bus. Met some really great Vols fans and tailgated with them until time to head to Neyland. We all had a great time talking crap to each other, but it was all in fun.

Different story when we got to the stadium. I expected to hear a lot of stuff directed at the Gators but it went above and beyond that. I can't blame "youth and alcohol" for the way these people acted. Most of them were gray haired gentleman who should have more class.

We sat in section F, row 55. It was just my wife and I. Of course we cheered and clapped for the few good things that Florida pulled off - but we were respectful.

We had water thrown at us, people getting in my face and telling me I wasn't welcome there and telling me to GTFO. I just ignored them for the most part.

I know that every fan wants their team to win, but lets have some common decency. It's to that end that I promise that I will go out of my way to talk to Vols fans in the Swamp when I meet them and try to make them feel welcome. It's just a game.

I know that every fan base has their bad seeds - but these older gentleman were just beyond disrespectful.

Congratulations to the Vols, though. This wasn't a game won by a bad call or "cheating." They came out after halftime looking like a team I had never watched before. Enjoy your victory - hope to see you in the Swamp next year!

This is why when I go to away games, I try to make sure that I am in the "visitors" section. If one sits in the middle of folks cheering for the other team, there is a high probability that they are going to at some point get words said to them unless they cheer quietly and don't make it all about them every time something good happens for their team.

Throwing things at cars, folks etc, is wrong but words are words. And unfortunately for Gator fans in the stands, your football team, with all the talk all summer and leading up to this game contributed to the attitude that many Vol fans had going into this game.

Well had I purchased the tickets I would've had the foresight to try and sit in the visitors section. The tickets were given to us as a gift. I came on this site to see if any misplaced Vols fans would like to trade their tickets for ours at no cost. We would've rather have sat in the visitors section, but I wasn't about to turn down free tickets to this game.

I think the whole thing is - if I don't personally talk trash to you and I'm not disrespectful then you should direct your anger where it belongs. I know that the vast majority of Vols fans are good upstanding people and I may have met the exception to the rule. I know that not all Florida fans act like I do, but I don't deserve to pay for their mistakes.

I was born in Florida but have lived most of my life in Tennessee. 99% of the people that I know and love are VFL. I just happen to like a certain football team (even when they suck) and I don't agree that my choice of team merits my being treated like trash.

As bad as I hate to take sides with a FL fan you are absolutely correct IMO. No matter who you pull for respect should be shown until given a reason otherwise. To throw stuff at people in the stands who are minding their business and trying to enjoy a football game is nothing but childish and stupid behavior. That being said, glad we whupped your tail :)

Actually, I have been many times. I was there last year when UF pulled that win out of their ass.

I have not personally seen anybody getting treated wrong but I don't deny that it happens.

No matter where it happens, its wrong. Respect is given where its earned. If nobody gives me any crap then I don't mess with them.

It doesn't. Reverse the experience and the vast of majority of folks would be equally upset. There is a serious lack of respect and common decency that's been creeping into our society and it's getting worse...yet we just pass a blind eye or condone it....as long as it's them and not us.

Jerry Springer, Wrasslin'....oh, and my new all time favorite...the Olympic sport of running red lights:mad:. A lot of folks just think it's acceptable to do what ever they damn well please with no repercussions...as long as they're not the victim.

For some reason people seem to thrive off it...how the devil else would an a$$clown like Trump get a major party nomination? And this is from a registered republican for the entire 37 years of my voting eligibility.

off soap box....just can't believe some of the adults on here view this as acceptable.

Remember that we did warn you and encourage you to trade tickets. The Reese Hall guy posted his phone number for you to call to trade with him. When I saw you were in Section F, I knew you were asking for trouble.

Since you are in Livingston, you probably saw the story about our state rep slapping the Florida fan. In the future, we suggest that all gators stay out of Neyland. Go watch them play in Nashville

Jeremy Durham kicked out of UT football game after hitting Florida fan

So by the same token you would have no business going to Gainesville to watch a game? Your perspective is that I asked for it just by being there? If that's how you see things - then you wouldn't have any reason to complain about being treated badly - it just goes with the territory.
I can't imagine how 2 people sitting in a crowd of 102,455people were "asking" for trouble.

I treat people right. I expect the same. It may be futile, but that's the way I feel.

I sincerely wish I had seen the guys number. We both would've enjoyed ourselves more.

Yes, I had family members in Gainesville last year and they were treated very poorly. Water thrown on them. Some middle-age drunk gator guy wanting to fight my 20-year old nephew pre-game. Somewhat similar story to your trip. Things are currently a bit chippy between those two fan bases.

Having been around for a few decades and having been to more than a few Vols games at Neyland and elsewhere, I can say that by and large, Tennessee fans are good-natured, affable, humble, generous, and easily parted from their money with little remorse. This has been affirmed by numerous fans of other schools' teams, merchants, and members of chambers of commerce. I've heard more "Y'all come back, now. Ya hear?"s and "Your hospitality was awesome"s than stories of misbehavior by miscreants and misquided fans under the influence.

If your a Big Orange fan, be the person you hope to encounter. Live it. If you're not there yet, strive for it. If you see bad behavior by a fellow Vols fan, gently ask them to correct their behavior. If you encounter a victim of bad behavior, express concern for their welfare and offer assistance.

If you're just a swingin' Richard dedicated to behaving badly, stay home and watch the games on television. Otherwise, know that should I witness you behaving in a manner which merits intervention by security or the authorities, I will not hesitate to bear witness and see you enjoy the consequences of your transgressions.

Fandom should be good fun. GBO.
