Disappointed in Oxford

The grove was the best tailgating I've been too, and I've been to most of the SEC.
Ole Miss in general was overrated. The town closes down at midnight, and it's a ghost town.

Zknott I have to agree with you on this one. First time I've been to Oxford and I thought it was highly disappointing. The Grove was just a bunch of tents packed in an open space. My cousin and I kept wondering where the cornhole was. The dressing up for a football game is just stupid. I really didn't notice an abundance of hot women that everyone claims to be there. Our gate was backed up because an old guy was giving everyone THOROUGH patdowns. And the stadium might have been nice for a high school team. I'm sure I'll get ripped for this but I seriously thought it sucked. The fratiness, aka douchiness, in the air just wasn't my thing.

I'm the cousin from the post above, and while I was disappointed in the Grove, I think part of it was the early kick-off and part of it was my vaulted expectations. We walked around the Grove for an hour or so before the game and didn't get invited to tailgate with anyone. Did you guys just get invited to join people or did you have to approach them? It probably would have been better after the game, but we rode with some friends from Memphis that wanted to get back, so we missed out on that. Luckily I got to enjoy myself at Gus' Fried Chicken and the Flying Saucer in Memphis.

And while there were some very attractive women, it wasn't nearly what I was expecting, but I'm not that impressed by the dressing up for a football game.

I'd walk up to a tent and say "hey do you mind if I catch the score/a few plays/some highlights". Sometimes the people were overly friendly and conversation led to drinks. Sometimes I could feel that they weren't feeling it so I'd just walk away. No harm done.

Yeah, I think if we had stayed after the game, we would have done that to watch the FLA/SC game.

The quality of the women in the grove this year was a little light compared to the last few times I've been there. Maybe the early start had something to do with it--a lot of the hot chicks were still getting ready.

The hot chicks were out in force after the game. That place was freaking awesome and by far THE BEST gameday experience I've ever had....and that includes all you mentioned several times over and many more. I have to agree with the poster who disagreed with everything you said. WAY more hotness than any other SEC school I've been to. I will say that before the game it wasn't nearly as evident as after....

You guys got a hunchback or something....not only did we get invited to tailgate with many....we got overly fed and handed a 5th of Gentlemen Jack and beers all afternoon. To top it off...we ended up back at a home of a super nice family in Oxford and a ride from there to the Square to party some more. Did ya'll shower?

Like I said, we were only there before the game. Unfortunately, the people we rode with didn't want to stick around after the game, so it might have been different afterwards. And yes we showered. I guess we weren't as lucky as you.

It was a joke man. A guy with us actually commented before the game that there weren't as many babes as he had expected.....he recanted that statement not 30 minutes afterwards.

I don't know. The more I think back on it, I realize it's more different than anything. The people didn't seem any nicer than tailgates in Auburn or Arkansas (similar programs in hatred levels) and the women on that day didn't seem any better than Knoxville. I guess their idea of a tailgate (dress up for games and pay students to set up their tents) just differs from what I'm used to. But all in all, my original point was that I had a good time, Oxford just couldn't live up to the reputation.

I was disappointed in the food quality in the grove. I thought the fans went all out with fancy stuff, but instead I saw a bunch of the typical tailgate stuff: burgers and fried chicken, with a bunch of cheap beer.

I have been to Knoxville for home games and I have been to professional football games(including playoffs) and also in the the pits for Nascar, but I have never seen anything like the GROVE... The people were friendly and my wife and I were in a bar Friday night on the square in Oxford and 2 students at Ole Miss were talking with us and taking us to different bars... The southern hospitality is amazing in Oxford. I just wish the score was different.. GO VOLS!!!!!!!!

apparently people are telling me the Grove is split into 2 parts. I was at the parts where the students are paid to set up tailgate tents. Gimme a break

Let's be realistic here guys. It's not like you were going to walk into the Grove and see thousands of tents with Master P gold ceilings and get fed ribs and turkey legs by naked super models while you drank expensive liquor.

I agree with PrattvilleVol. I'm from Montgomery, so its right up the road. The Aubs are every as nice and their facilities for tailgating are way better. Heck, they have water trucks laying water on the dirt roads in the RV sites to keep the dust down... I'd go there before Oxford any Saturday.
