Direct or Dish?

I have Directv for 4 years. My Comcast cable went out way more than my Directv. I may have lost signal twice in 4 years from storms.
Direct is much better than Comcast. Best service I've ever gotten and I've had very little weather related problems. They have me sold. Comcast will never get another $ out of me as long as I am alive. Never despised a corporation more.

16 yrs. with dish. Great Customer service. Cheaper than Direct. Get more more bang for he buck. Had Direct put in didn't like it had Dish put back in. Everybody has a story and a favorite. Rain thing isn't an issue for me either.

I didn't find out something very frustrating about Directv today. I am moving, and asked about the advertised moving special. What the fail to tell you in the commercial is that it automatically extends your contract one year. Think I am going to just cancel service, and pay the remaining one month on my contract, and then renew in my wife's name once we get the new house. Get all those new customer specials!

is there a minimum time period required before you get the new equipment, specials, etc.?

I moved in 2010 and it did not extend my contract. I may have got lucky.
I am ouf of contract and called them last month and ask if I could sign another contract and lower my bill. I was told I did not need to. They lowered my rate $25 and gave me showtime and tmc for a year at no charge and still not under contract.

I've had both and prefer Direct over Dish. I have had no problems and customer service has been great.

Can I get a Tennessee resident with dish to confirm or deny this? I will be using it in Springville, TN so it should be in the local coverage area. Outside of the one PPV game I am looking for the provider that will have all other games on.

Both providers' websites have a place where you can input your address and see exactly which local stations you will receive. I believe it will tell you if they are in HD as well. You can also call them and find the same information.

As far as the rest...I've had both services (DirecTV for the past 6 years though) and they both carry the important channels for the Vols. The "experts" will tell you that DirecTV's picture quality has the edge, but honestly I can't really tell the difference. I will say that DirecTV's HD-DVR is an impressive piece of equipment. I have not used a (modern) Dish DVR to compare, but I do know that the DirecTV unit has won several technical awards. I believe they both blow away anything cable has to offer, in hardware and in service.

The current account is in my name. I think we can get around it by putting new account in the wife's name.

That's all it takes, even for the same address? That sounds good---I would like a new upgrade with all the new HD DVR stuff they give new customers now!!! :)

I really appreciate all the input. I am needing this for a cabin on Kentucky lake where cable is not an option. So I'm left with only the sat providers. I was concerned that Direct or Dish would be limited in the programming for UT football. Frankly that's all I'm looking for is being able to be at the cabin in the fall and watch games. I've not gone to the cabin in the past specifically because I couldn't watch the UT game (because listening to Bob isn't a viable option).

From everyon'e input it sounds like Dish may be my best option since it covers all UT games and is cheaper.

If this is really all you're looking for, then I would just take your laptop (unless you have a PC there) and connect it to your TV. As some have already said, nearly all providers (Dish, DirecTV, Comcast) have the ability to stream shows from their websites. Why add an additional account when you can use the one you already have? I have Dish, and am able to watch any show I want (or set recordings to the DVR) from anywhere.

This may or may not work for you.
When I went with Direct, I received a dish and tripod to use with my travel trailer on camping trips.
I just take one of the boxes and remote from home and hook up when I setup at campground.

That would be free Direct for your cabin, if you signed up with Direct at home.

Just an option.

I don't have internet service at the cabin either. This place is off the grid. I have walk about 200 yards into a clearing to get real sketchy cell service.
