Ye Old Steakhouse! Great steaks and definately uniquely Tennessee. It doesnt have that major chain feel to it.

The Orangery closed, didn't it??

I recommend Sunspot, OCI, and Copper Cellar on the strip.
Market Square has Tomato Head.
Old City, Barley's for pizza.

West Knoxville, Lakeside Tavern.

I make better ribs than Calhoun's. Overrated. I mean, it's fine, but it does not deserve its reputation.

I always like to get a couple of beers at the Preservation Pub and a pizza at the Tomato Head on Market Square, but that's mostly because I like cheap and easy.

Sad state of affairs when someone looks for restaurant recommendations and the chain restaurant (Calhouns) is the one to get the rousing approval.

Seriously, is that the best Knoxville can do?

Just wondering, why are there so many threads on where to eat? No one knows how to use search!

ye olde steak house - 4 miles down chapman hwy... always good
sunspot on campus
vic and bill's deli - 3 miles north on broadway from ut <---- as good as ever
oci - great sunday location when things have quieted down; nice patio
chop house - great pork chops, prime rib and steak (not a chain - Knoxville based with several locations)

Gus' Good Times Deli is literally right off of campus and it has delicious food. Greasy, a bit expensive... but delicious.

So any local restaurant with more than 1 location is a chain? Ruth's Chris is a chain, Calhouns is not. And it may not be the best food but it has a good gameday atmosphere.

I will be in Knoxville for the UCLA game. Any recommendations on great places to eat. I prefer places with local flavor and would love to find a good barbecue place.

Thanks.

It's not BBQ, but a great local spot for Mexican Food is Soccer Taco on Bearden Hill. By the time the UCLA game comes around, the Market Square location should be open........great authentic food and fantastic margaritas!!!

OK first off I don't know if Rafferty's is open but in west knoxville on Kingston Pike the Club Sandwich was amazing. About 9 bucks for the sandwich and it was MASSIVE....

I know it is very obscure place but if you take Chapman Hwy south into the town of Seymour, there is a place on your right about 10-15 minutes drive called BOB-E-QUE. It is cheap and amazing. Seriously the recipe won the Memphis BBQ Championship about 6 years ago. They have lunch everyday a huge bbq sandwich and 2 sides +drink for 5 Bucks. They have a catering package, and by the way I really hope they are still open.....

Man I miss knoxville

Haha, Soccer Taco is pretty good. Gus's good times deli has a fantastic (albeit dripping with grease) Reuben. Too bad that Charlie Pepper's has closed, they had some very good eats.

Chandlers deli is a can't miss if you like southern/soul food, not a chain either. It's been discussed in previous food threads...

...also, since Calhouns is so close to the stadium and the area around where the volnavy docks up, you will be waiting a very long ime if you want to sit down for a meal. I suggest drinks and apps (try the ribs) if you go on gameday, the atmosphere there is certainly unbeatable.

Calhouns is awful...but to each their own.

I wish that I could recommend the Riverside Tavern, but they have closed. If you like steaks the Chop House is fantastic, but it is a chain, so it won't be anything that is exclusive to Knoxville. If you are willing to drive abit further check out Ye Olde Steakhouse on the Chapman Hwy. It's about 20 minutes out of town, just cross the bridge and it will be on your left side after 7 or so miles. They may not look like much from the outside, but they have great steaks - Ye Olde Steak House - 577-9328 - Knoxville, TN.

The Orangery is considered by most to be the mecca of "Fine Dining" in K-Town, never been there myself but I've heard nothing but great things. The Orangery Restaurant| fine dining| French Cuisine| Knoxville Tennessee| international cuisine| wines| upscale| high end dining

If you want something that is abit of a staple for the college crowd, yet has some fantastic food....really has everything from simple burgers to a very good prime rib, I'd suggest The Copper Cellar on the strip. I used to go there on Wednesday's for $3.99 burgers. Copper Cellar

To be honest, I never found a great BBQ place while I was living there...I guess I was used to the stuff you find in Memphis. There is a Corky's on Kingston Pike, but beyond that I never found much.

Challhouns is not awful but the best steak you will ever have is ye olds now if you go down a little bit to maryville in the foothills area by the movies is a place called buddys best ribs i've ever had:eek:k:

Krystal's should always be a part of the Tennessee game day experience whether it be pre-game or for the 2 am munchies. You'll remember the food long after you've consumed it.:)

They only have those in the southeast I've found. Havent seen them anwhere in the western U.S.

They do have them here in vending machines, frozen. :eek:hmy:

Cracker Barrell!

That's not a chain, right? :)

But so far, all good recommendations. well, almost all are.

Calhoun's - Not bad - Ribs are good. But they have a steak, called "The Ale Steak" which is incredible. Its marinated with a red ale beer-based marinade.

Smoky Mtn Brewery - Good (but thin) pizza. Wings are great. They also have the Ale Steak. (Same company) Both have good micro-brewed beers. I prefer the Cherokee Red Ale.

Ye Olde Steak House - Looks like a dump, but its cozy and great. It is a bit pricey as well. The steaks are great. I also had the swordfish. It was incredible. One Note - last time I went it was a BYOB type place. You could bring your own bottle of wine or champagne.

Puleo's Grill - This place is hard to describe the "theme" of their food selection. It is good though. there are 3 locations I believe.

Connor's steaks and seafood - alot of people rave about this place. it is not my favorite, although I have had some pretty good dishes. It's owned by the same owner's of the previously mentioned Chop House.

Barley's Pizzeria - In the old city, downtown. great pizza. Chili isn't bad either. fantastic beer selection. 50 something beers on tap I think. Pretty relaxed, fun atmosphere.

If I think of any more, I will post them.
