Dillon Bates played quite a few snaps vs UF...

We seem to have a knack for high ankle sprains. I'm not sure if it's the crappy field, our players' techniques, or if all of college football is experiencing this but I just do not recall high ankle sprains being such an issue 5-10 years ago.

This is my uneducated opinion on "high" ankle sprains. I have always thought that was due to the mass-taping of ankles now. (Old man alert)...When I was playing, you only got your ankles taped if you had previously rolled your ankle. Now, everybody seems like they get their ankles taped as a precaution. What that does, though, is not allow your ankle to give when you get rolled up on. Instead the pressure is put a little higher up past the joint.

Now taping does prevent some minor twists and rolls, but I guess it is a decision they would rather risk.

yep, it's football, after all...contact sport...we've come full circle from astro turf, back to grass, back to whatever name is on the newest turf on the market, back to grass...now, maybe we need special pads on the ankles up to the knees...:)

GO VOLS!

I'm wondering how much his shoulder injuries have hampered his lifting abilities. It would suck to not be able to work out and get stronger waiting on a shoulder to heal.

Multiple shoulder issues with surgery will set anyone back, but he's fighting his way back to the rotation, via special teams
The best is yet to come from Mr Bates it appears:good!:

Makes you wonder just when JRM will be back at or near 100%.

To really "old man alert" high top shoes were good at stopping sprains years ago. The material they can make shoes out of these days, don't know why they are not used more. Not a stylish enough statement?

While Kirkland and JRM are out, I hope they continue the LB rotation. Jumper did have a great game against Florida. I hope he can continue that level of success against UGA. McDowell seems to also be doing well.

Rotating the "Killer B's" in/out will only help our depth: Bynum, Bates, Bryant & Bituli

Is Sapp injured?

i was very happy for Jumper. he did play well, and he played better than i thought he was capable of.

the stop on 3rd and 1 in the 3rd qtr was huge, and the pass he defended in the end zone was impressive, and again, he made an athletic play that i didn't think he could, kudos to him.

i think McDowell is getting better and Bituli looked good and physical. glad to see some of that depth...we sorely need it right now with JRM and DKjr out....

The "needs experience" part is what I think too. Didn't he have a couple of shoulder issues before and after joining UT? Still lingering maybe along with needing experience?

Regardless, I am so sick and tired of shoulder injuries at UT over the last three years.

At least we're not UGA with RBs!!! 😄

Good to see Bates getting some meaningful PT. Not knocking him at all, but he looked a tad frail compared to Jumper, Bynum and Bryant. Can't replicate game time speed, but he looked to be swimming a few plays. But, on the bright side, he looked to have good instincts...just a bit slow reacting....he will get there!

He looked lost. McDowell came in and played very well. I think the coaches put him in to show the fans Jumper is actually better than Bates. Bates will improve but he's getting passed by other more talented LB's.

He was on the field at the same time as Jumper.

Bituli looked great on that goal line play... I want to see him in extended action.. Bates performed well too... LB will be fine

IMO he looked terrible. Jumper and Mcdowell, both got better by playing though so maybe the kid needs snaps.

Just wanted hear yalls thoughts on his performance. I thought he was okay granted he was thrown into live fire against a big rival. He seemed timid but that's understandable. Will only get better with experience.

He is really thin to play linebacker. Had trouble shedding blocks to be able to make plays. Don't know why he hasn't been able to add bulk after all this time but if he can't get bigger he will have a hard time ever being an effective linebacker.

Can't play anywhere else so future looks to be backup / special teamer

Nice assssment, makes intuitive sense. Not a medical professional though but I'll roll with it until told otherwise

I know everyone wants him to be great being a legacy but he was lost. late to read every play and basically got blocked off the screen every play. I hope he gets better but there is a reason he has not played. Hope is not lost for him but he is probably 5th string if we are 100% healthy

When we signed him I pictured him evolving into the type backer that Alex Anzalone is now. That kid is a player...

If there is anything we've learned from the Colton Chronicle is that just because a guy comes out flat and gets beat the first several times we see him play (BG and OK last year, Vtech, etc this year) doesn't mean he's a lost cause. I think with time he'll come around just fine.

Regarding the reason he hasn't played...I think that's a pretty simple and obvious answer. Injuries/buried in the depth chart. If we didn't have JRM/DKjr/Quarte Sapp, we would see him pretty often...kind of like we did on Saturday. I'm not trying to call you out specifically or anything, but we all just need to understand we have some serious talent in our LB group. They just haven't had the opportunity and time to show it.

If I'm not mistaken that was Bates' first playing time at linebacker in the college ranks. I know he's played special teams, but his first time at the position he was recruited for. To have your first playing time in perhaps the most intense environment he will ever experience in college, I would say he deserves a little slack.
