Difficult to fire Fulmer

You never asked who would get the ax. However, you did say "what if" Fulmer brings in a top class, won't it be hard to get rid of him in those circumstances.

Then, I said I don't think that will have anything to do with whether or not Fulmer is fired. I also said Fulmer won't be signing a top 5 class.

....the fact of the matter is that this program was in much worse shape when Majors left than what it is now.

I disagree. UT won or had a share of 2 SEC championships in the last 3 full years Majors was at UT and finished ranked in the top 15 in all of them. I'd much rather have that than what we've seen from this program the last few years. I'm not saying getting rid of Johnny was a bad idea, but I think the next coach isn't inheriting nearly as much as what Fulmer stepped into.

A top 5 recruiting class means little when you can not develop the players. Or as the UCLA game showed, have the more talented team and flat be out coached.

If great recruiting classes really did "load us up for years to come," then we would have won a lot more than two SEC championships in the last year.

There's no doubt that Fulmer and his staff can bring talent to Knoxville. Our recruiting classes have been as good as almost anybody's; we send as many players to the NFL as almost anybody. The problem is that our coaches don't seem to be able to do much with them in between.

:good!:

Uhhhh, I think tabrams is trying to say that Clawson will get the ax and that Fulmer will have a top-5 recruiting class. Somehow I picked up on that.

Question is, who will get the AX?????? given the above info, I say Clawson is the easy target, Fulmer gets to stay here, sadly..........
Who hired Clawson? And why would anybody think Fulmer could do a better job with the next hire? It's not like he's had much luck in that department.

Exactly! It was time for Johnny to go, but, at the same time, the program was in much better shape in 92 than it is right now.

Ok.. Assuming fulmer miraculously has a top 5 recruiting class it still wouldnt matter. Clawson wont get the ax after just one year. Fulmer hasnt done much with the talent he does have. I doubt he would do any better with the new talent. Randy sanders got the blame last time .. we havent exactly been dominant since he has been gone.
Assuming this season is a bust 6-6 or worse Fulmer should be gone.

I think it would be possible to be ranked top 5, if they sign alot of guys, upwards of 30, like they did 2 years ago.....when they signed 32

Those top 10 or 5 whatever you want to call them have not translated to winning on the field, so recruiting classes mean nothing at this point, we are past that.

"Difficult to Fire Fulmer".......not at all, you just have to have enough GUTS to do it. (and do not come at me with the buyout issue)
Think how much better we will be with a better coach and all that talent CPF brings in.

not once.........maybe u don't understnad how to answer a question............first u have to READ it.......

AFTER the season ends.........who will get the AX???
My bet is Clawson........Fulmer gets another chance, bc/ of the contract, and great recruting class.......

what do u think???

Man you have repeated yourself about twenty times. NO, Clawson will not be fired by Fulmer, The last asst coach on the list that has not been replaced is Chavis and we know that Fulmer won't do anything there, he has said that.

It is the end of the line for CPF. He gave us several good years and brought the program back, BUT he has regressed and had his chances the last five years. It's time for a change.

IF Tenn finishes 5-7 or 6-6 and CPF has a top-5 recruiting class, this means CPF will still be at the helm in February 2009. By February 2009, Fulmer, fans, and recruits will know there's no coaching change on the horizon for the 2009 season. Clawson would not be released after one year unless there is a head coach change. So, if the premises of the original question come to pass (poor 2008 record; top-5 class), IMO this means no Fulmer/Clawson coaching changes.

Reality: Tenn appears headed for a less-than-stellar record... but every team that plays Tenn - including GA & Bama - will be scared of Tenn because they oughta' be lots better than they've played to date. Regarding recruiting, IMO there's no way Tenn sniffs a top-10 recruiting class. Mid-teens if lucky. Too much concern about coaching turmoil to cause recruits to flock to Tenn.

It will be a 10-15 ranked class.

If fulmer leaves, I don't think UT will fire him. Instead, fulmer will tire of all the heat, get a rich settlement from the university (near $5 mil) and leave on his own terms.

How many times have we had a top 5 class and done nothing with it? I am getting tired of wait til next season and we end up losing 1 of the first 2 games in the SEC and looking from the backseat waiting on a mistake from someone else.

If we finish 5-6 or 6-6 what makes you think that next year will be better. We hardly play underclassmen and if you havent noticed WE DO NOT HAVE A QB!!!!

Fulmers record against the new kids on the block speak for itself and if the fans/concessions are down then he will be fired.

This senior class was a top 3 class.

Well, I think alot of people here on this board, including myself might have missed something in all the "get rid of fulmer" comments..........

Obviously, we're all pretty upset (to put it mildly) watching our team underacheive week in and week out, and slowly see our once all-mighty program sink into the depths of utter despair........

What if the team has a BAD record, as many of us predict, but the amazing recruiter Fulmer is able to pull off yet another TOP-5 recruiting class, loading the team up for YEARS to come...........

It may be very difficult to cut Fulmer loose under those cirumstances..........With a big contract in place, and another TOP-5 recruiting class on the way, my guess is that some offensive assistants will be sent packing, including Clawson, and Fulmer gets to stay..........

what do u guys think???

First of all, most of the guys that have verbally committed to us already will end up signing to go elsewhere on National Signing Day. There is no way that we'll end up with a top 5 class. Secondly, Fulmer and company have already proved numerous times that they are sufficiently inept at their jobs to prevent even the best of recruiting classes from panning out on the field and producing the results that we would expect.

thanks for someone finally answering the question!!!
I agree with you mostly.......look, I want to see a head coaching change just as bad as the people here......I just think that if CPF comes up with a GREAT recruiting class again, with his massive contract, he's in a Charlie Weiss type-of-situation, and he will try to PASS the blame, like he did in 2005.........

In all honestly, 2005 was one of the WORST coaching jobs by any coach, in any sport I have ever seen, if not the absolute WORST.........We went from a pre-season record of #3 in the country to 5-6, not even bowl-eligible, with the #2 defense in the country......actually, I'm sure our defense was really #1 that year, as much as they were on the field.......

Of course we NEED a change.......but I don't think Hamilton will do it.........I think Clawson will get the AX......somebody's gonna get the AX, that's for sure.......question is, who will it be??
