I am so glad this season is now over but it got me thinking about something. On paper we have a talented team that have many 4* and some 5* guys. Yet it seems like the majority of these guys are just not that good. So I wonder, ist it all justpoor coaching? Or did the recruiting services who rated guys like KMac, Philips, Kongbo, JG, Calloway just complete miss judge their talent?

I am thinking its a mixture of the two. I think we have had terrible coaching but also, some of these guys were not as good as reported.

Our coaches failed us, and failed the kids on the field.

The rankings are a lot of times projections for the future. Those kids need to be coached up to reach that potential.

No, it is development. Every program is going to have its fair share of busts, but we are simply not developing our talent. Prime example is to look at kids that have transferred. Most of them are playing meaningful roles and contributing to their new teams. Just off the top of my head, Ferguson, Hendrix, Payne, Peterman, Wharton, etc.

No they failed Chip Kelly.

But just think by this time tomorrow ......

We will all be ecstatic.............or maybe ready to burn half our clothes.

Look at the attrition this program has suffered since Jones took over. The rankings dont matter when youve lost 40 players over a 5 year period.

Out of curiosity, how are Hendrix and Payne doing? I don't even know where they ended up.

I find it highly unlikely that we missed on every single player we recruited, so I’d definitely go with coaching and development.

Josh Dobbs will tell you. He never progressed under our coaching staff. How many players get better once they left CBJ? 5 stars without development stay 5 stars on a high school level. Jones didn't have 1 player develop here. They've all left with what they brought in.

Read an article a while back that only 30% of Jones players lived up.....easily lowest in sec
And injuries are part of football, but it’s been ridiculous the last 2 years at UT.... bad luck???
I don’t think so, more like undeveloped,unconditioned
Players taught to play finesse in a smash mouth league

Honestly this thread is what drives people crazy. Group A says look at the stars of these recruits. Group B says stars are overrated, you are wasting your time and focusing on the wrong thing. This year happens and it is very obvious coaching failed the players. Group A can't accept the truth and Group B is going to say I told you so.

Reality, recruiting, position coaching, schematic coaching, game day coaching, conditioning, etc all make the great teams. You need all of it. The difference between these top rated athletes gets very thin at this level and beyond.

Yes. I want a coach that never looks at Rivals, Scout or 247. If they do and rely on those services as actual tools of their trade....that is coaching malpratice.

Payne starts at Iowa State and Hendrix recovered a game saving fumble for Pitt against Miami Friday. I know it is not SEC ball, but they are contributing.

To sum up Butch, he could recruit a new class pretty well. But he would lose those players faster than he could develop the previous class. Hence the chronic problem of a young team with little depth.
