Did Pruitt...

I agree with you to a point. I think they did play vanilla, but it is because the kids just don't know the offensive and defensive schemes yet so they are forced to play vanilla. I saw a defense that had a very confused young secondary and an offense that was not executing along the line of scrimmage. They'll improve as the season goes along, but it will take time.
Yeah i would agree he hasnt taught them all he knows or wants to do, nor would it be realistic to expect them to perform it all at a high level. I think most everyone would agree there. Hopefully that will come with time, but probably not this year and certainly not in 2 weeks.
And sorry for me, Florida is considered an automatic lose until the vols prove otherwise

keep his aces in his pocket to not show his hand to Florida??? I haven't had a chance to watch the replay of WVU. It didn't appear as though UT tryed to confuse WVU much with schemes or call blitzes much. Yes, I am being an optimist. I am hoping that is the case. I hope UT held back on O too. We will see in less than 16 days. Let's hope Pruitt did and UT can still win at least 3 games in the SEC and make a bowl. Losing Kennedy hurt UT badly. Let's hope the OL and DL can improve a ton in 16 days!

Edit to OP, nowhere above did I say Pruitt was PLAYING TO LOSE!!! I know that is not him. Maybe the D isn't ready for Pruitt to scheme and stunt the way he wants.

I don't think we purposely withheld schemes and plays in this game. I think we are taking baby steps as a team and haven't thought that far ahead to the Florida game.

I am not saying he didn't. It was a question. I am not saying I don't agree with you. I should have worded my OP differently. Not you Gandalf, but, a lot of people have made statements like I said we were playing to lose. I didn't say that in my OP. Maybe CJP didn't call some stunts/schemes that the D hasn't perfected yet, maybe not. Maybe we won't play any better on D the remainder of the year. I say we will see a lot better D vs UF. Again, I am hopeful and optimistic.

I think with a new system, he is having trouble enough just getting everyone to do the fundamentals correctly and learn their assignments for a smaller playbook. I will take another year before he is able to teach a deeper playbook. That is why I think he uses so many different looks. He is trying to make it simple for the players to follow while trying to make it more difficult for the other team to read.

It will be interesting to see if CJP breaks a 25 year tradition of UT coaches puckering up their bung hole so tight you can't drive a needle in it with a jack hammer on Florida week. Only exception in that time was Kiffin's lone year.

I would agree to an extent, we definitely didn’t show everything we can do on offense. As for defense, I think we see a lot more blitzing going forward from OLB’s. It was hard to get a pass rush this last game because of how much max protect WVU used.

Thanks for the input. I did see the article. I am hoping Pruitt does have some other schemes to use that can be taught before the FL game. I am hoping all the D schemes haven't been installed or learned. I should have worded my OP differently. I am hoping UT was vanilla (due to it being necessary, not by choice) on D compared to what Pruitt can do in the future once all of the schemes are learned by all of the D players!!!
I hope so too. Bigger thing is as the season goes on his players will become more acquainted with the schemes and will execute it faster. Esp the linebackers who seemed slow. Plus this might be the best Passing attack we see all year.

I’m sure that’s it. Brilliant strategy.

Florida should try to counter Pruitt by making its players play with their shoes on the wrong feet for the next two weeks. This will make them look slower and less coordinated, and then when the UT game rolls around, boom, put the shoes on the right feet and off you go.

Strategery.
BYE!!

Why would a coach not go all out to beat a ranked team in the first game of the season? Hide part of the playbook because of a game 3 weeks off? If we played a bunny the first game then had UF the next, maybe.

We aren't a good team, YET! We will be playing better in a few weeks, however we aren't as loaded with talent that's needed in order to get back winning against the top tier in the SEC. Hang in there because we do have a real football coach now.

The old "didn't open the playbook" theory. Well, if he did, he's playing the long game and has nerves of steel. Brilliant having Kennedy side-step and watch that tackle, too.

Honestly even though JG had a great game, he missed a lot of receivers that were open. This isn't all on him though. I mean the first half he was lucky to not get smacked in the backfield.

However as the game developed and less pressure was on him and he had more time to throw the ball he wasn't allowing routes to develop. Or he wasn't going through progressions. That is the reason we sputtered on a few drives like the one 4 and out we had in the redzone. He made a bad throw to one of the Receivers who was headed to the endzone and made him come back to the ball outside of the endzone. He will improve on those kinds of those throws though. So I think JG and our team get better as the games go on.

I don’t thing CJP was sandbagging. He gave the team as much as he thought that they could handle considering the new offense and defense. This was probably the reason that players appeared to be slow. At this stage, they are having to think about their assignments rather than just be able to react.

If you still have hope left in your fandom heart that this will be a good year then you might want to run out and buy some lube cause you are about to take in the arse....

Got some in the back garage. It's marine lube, so it should hold up till bowl time.

The above statement is the reason you have 10 times the posts as likes in the last 9 years. We are talking about football here. We aren't talking about what you do during your spare time!!! A good year after last year would be 3 SEC wins and a bowl. Yes, I still have hope and belief that it is attainable and will happen. I am an optimist!

No way-CP is a real football coach, he will try to win Every game, every time. His first game as HC-he wouldn't have "Held back", in the hopes of confusing FL. I don't believe he'll ever take a loss, in the hopes it will confuse someone later in the season, thus giving us a chance to win a particular game.
