Did Khalil Mackenzie play?

They got rid of the ball immediately when they did pass. The no sacks stat for that game is misleading because they never really took any time back there

We were trying to get it out quickly as well, certainly weren't throwing any deep routes/long developing plays and Dobbs, a much more athletic player than Lamb, was sacked twice and hit a few other times.

He made more dumb decisions than Lamb who I believe was a freshman? Lambs interception was from Cam Sutton making an NFL play.

You serious Clark? Kirkland was all over the place and McDowell played like an SEC starter. I thought the linebackers played very well.

I didn't think Kirkland played particularly well either. As Doug Mathews said this morning, he really didn't notice DKJr out there. I thought JRM was playing great before being ejected and I thought McDowell came in and played very well after the first few series he was in. But DKJr, I think we need him to be better than he was, especially early in the game.

Big disappointment so far. Just like last year based on his hype is only reason I say that

The scheme appy state went with was different than anything else Tennessee will see all year. When they did actually pass (other than the td where the guy ran backwards and threw up a no look prayer) they got rid of the ball almost instantly. The dline will look much better against Virginia tech.

Kirkland wasn't disruptive in the back field by any means but I watched him in coverage several times and he was locking his player down.

First off, Lamb is a junior. Secondly, it wasn't about decisions, it was about App State's DL completely wrecking our OL and getting great pressure on Dobbs, especially up the middle. Conversely, our DL did nothing of the sort to their much very pedestrian QB who was maybe half the athlete that Dobbs is. We didn't get near the kid most of if not all night long v

Yes, we should have played better. But let's give them some credit. They were chop blocking and they ran that scheme to dark near perfection. Did we come out flat? Yes. We're we buying into our own hype and looking ahead to Bristol? Most likely. But that was a good team, and they came to win, and they played with a chip on their shoulder.

The chop blocking concerned me. I'm glad there were no injuries. I guess it's still legal within the confines of the line of scrimmage, but IMO should be illegal. Joe Gibbs, when he was the coach of the Washington Redskins, would not allow his offensive lineman to use chop blocking. A lot of teams and coaches will not use it. My best guess is it's used as an equalizer.

Our entire Dline got man handled

You must have been watching a different game. We held them to 292 yards of offense
They had 17 first downs
Appy did not even score in the second half or overtime
Appy scored more points against Clemson than they did against our defense
They are a very good running football team and have a ton of veteran players-
It's true that we were not dominant but I would not say that we got manhandled

Vol fans feel like Appalachian State won?

A couple of surprising stats tell how and why we won that game. App St was 3/13 third down efficiency, we went 7/16. They actually outrushed us at >4 ypc where we were at 3 ypc. Notably we did better the 2nd half than the first defensively so the first half must have been gaudy on their side of the stat sheet. Passing stat, you think we were bad 6.6 ypc? App State was 4.3 ypc, they run it statistically for more yardage than their passing game, yikes!!! Both teams have significant areas where they need to improve.

Cut blocking is awful and glad none of our boys were hurt. Very difficult to prepare for in practice.
