I'll start by saying I love that these guys chose to come back and give their all for Tennessee. Question is was it the right call for their career?
I don't remember what their draft grades were, but what will they be after missing 80% of the season. I know JRM could still possibly play but heard somewhere he may need surgery and to get ready for the draft.
I hate that this has happened to these two VFLs, but this is the exact reason why you here guys of their talent going early. Also do you think this will effect Hurds decision after the season? I think personally Hurd could use another season after this one, especially with this draft being loaded with running backs.

I don't think they have lost draft status for staying another year. Neither were rated to go in either the first or second last year (if I remember correctly). I don't think that they have improved their draft status either though...... Still lots of time to have that question answered.

Professionally? Absolutely not.
As team captains? The biggest, most selfless contribution anyone has made to the Vols since Inky. What more could you ask of a player?

As long as they recover fully from their injuries, the long term cost to them is essentially zero. One could argue that they lose a year of NFL playing time at their prime, but that's such a squishy thing to measure, not sure anyone could really make a case either way.

The goal they set when they decided to come back to Tennessee has not been lost. They can still lead this team to compete for championships. Including, perhaps, doing so on the field at the end of the year. They just have to apply their leadership in a different way than they expected for right now.

Having said all that, you couldn't blame the lads for having second thoughts when it's just them and their family around. That's human nature.

Nevertheless, their futures are still bright as the sun. Both here at Tennessee and beyond.

Go Vols!

They will earn combine invites. Cam will make his money at the combine. This may raise more questions regarding JRM's shoulder though. Although I love Vol football, I would prefer the young men focus on getting healthy. They've done all they can for Vol football.

That is HUGELY far from true. In leadership alone, they can make a big difference for the team. Beyond that, there's a good chance both of them take the field if we're playing in Atlanta in December and the playoffs (or any other bowl) in January.

Maybin was already dealing with a shoulder issue and wouldn't have been combine ready due to surgery.

plus, he doesn't project at the pro level. 5th round pick at best last year.

Sutton, likely stays the same. He'll be healed by combine. 2nd round pick.

They came back for all the right reasons from a team standpoint. It's just a risk you a take coming back when you can go pro. I think another season would have done their draft stock good had they not got injured. They'll get combine invites though and showout.

Sutton per several articles comes from a family of educators and always had placed a premium on graduating on or before time. Had he been a solid round 1 or 2 lock, he may have gone, otherwise he was a lock to stay even though the great mass of VN posters had him gone at the time. JRM I'm not as familiar with his background, but staying in school another year is not a bad choice, EVER. Why? Even though to those of us of the great unwashed think $1 million is a LOT of money, it's really not that much to a young person starting out on their work life. First if you get a guaranteed million, taxes take somewhere between a third or up to half right off the top. $500k for ten years taking you from your early 20s to 30s is only $50K per year, what are you going to do the rest of your life?? Staying in school is never a bad choice, playing, especially in the NFL where a lot of money is not guaranteed can be IMO.

Hindsight is 20/20 on JRM and Sutton. It was a gamble. They would've had a much bigger payday if things would've gone well. In regards to Hurd, he is gone after this year regardless. I doubt he ever intended on staying four years. I am just guessing, but I don't think he has been happy in this system. Why would he come back? Blocking has been bad for him this year, fans haven't been appreciative, and now the injury (and I do believe it is a concussion). He will shine at the combine.

I am selfless. I would prefer that they focus on getting healthy. If we make it all the way to Atlanta without them, why bring them back to chance them getting hurt again or messing with the team chemistry that has been established over the season in their absence.

Sutton was graded by some experts to be a low 1st high 2nd type of pick.

That's the thing, though, Titan. They're not absent. They're in the locker room, on the practice field, and in the stadium with their team mates. They're making a difference. They're contributing. They're still leading, just in a different way.

Don't write Cam and JRM off as leaders of Team 120. They are still very engaged and making a difference. And they can do all that and get healthy, too.

If these guys was projected to be 1-2 drafts they where gone. It is not worth it to go in rounds 3-7 unless you can not make it in college. If they improve their stock they could gain extra $?00,000 and it is not guaranteed they will even get drafted just ask North. There decisions was good.... they got a degree and tried to improve their stock but $hit happens.

Oh, I agree that they are still leading. I am just talking about them playing....risk vs. reward scenario.

Maybin absolutely projects at the pro level. Linebackers that can cover and tackle are more valuable than ever.

Nope, if any of these kids have the opportunity to go get paid they need to take it.

I think that maybins draft stock was hurt more than Suttons. Suttons injury isn't a nagging one that keeps coming back and bothering him and shoulder injuries can kinda be a red flag. I sure hope both guys have long successful pro carrers though!

I agree with a lot of the views on here. JRM it probably doesn't effect as much as Sutton and I am super glad that these guys came back and love the leadership that they bring to the team even on the sidelines. Just hate that these injuries happened to such great all around human beings. Get healthy guys and ball out at the combine.
If the shoulder does need surgery but he has the option to play then surgery or surgery and rehab for combine what should JRM do? He is a competitor and you could see it on his face during the Florida game it was killing him not being on the field, but I think he should go on and get the shoulder fixed (if thats what it needs) and get ready to combine.
