Did Helton blindside Pruitt

If Pruitt promotes his best friend who's position players showed no improvement (case could easily be made they were worse game 12 than game 1), to OC from OL his time here will be very limited. He shouldn't return as OLC let alone be considered for OC. Talk about stupid!!!!
Well technically there were only 2 maybe 3 that started on the OL left healthy by game 12 but your point is well taken.

After the Vandy game, I read Helton was out. Then, I read that Pruitt said Helton was in and the two were headed out to recruit. A day later, Helton has taken a new job.

Since we are all experts now in coaching searches, it seems Helton was likely being interviewed, considered and vetted prior to yesterday. Wouldn’t Helton have told Pruitt? If so, shouldn’t this look more like a organized hire that is already well underway and not the crazy scramble we have seen in the past?

If it’s a scramble either Pruitt dropped the ball or Helton blindsided him.
My opinion is it was mutual.

Next year will provide us answers to a lot of questions on this program going forward...we will really see if Pruitt can do this for real..
Do you really think so? I read hundreds of posts when Pruitt was hired that said by the end of this year we all will know if he is the right coach or not. My opinion, and that is all it is, is that if we do not have SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT (something like eight wins minimum and competive in all games) by the end of next year Pruitt will not last beyond three years, maybe two years.

The fan base is really fed up with the last ten or more years of mismanagement and Fulmer knows this! Sad to say but we are currently a lower tier program that is in the trash pile of has beens! Sad to say but sometimes the truth hurts! It is going to take a long time to get our reputation back, if we ever do!

I don’t know that. I do know that we’ll be better off not having another coach learning on the job.
Not saying I want Friend. I don’t. But he’s had experience as OC. I realize not at SEC level. But he’s at least been OC.

It is a stretch to say that being an OC in the MW conference is experience. If Pruitt thought so highly of Friend why did he hire Helton and make Friend the O line coach.

Im not connected like that man. It doesnt make you curious or are you just trying to hype yourself up for the hire?

What I'm stating is I do not have a clue who is the best hire for O.C. Some people on Volnation are knocking this coach or that coach and no one really knows who is going to be the best fit. To say Friend would not be a good O.C. is foolish because he does have somewhat of a good track record in that role.

I get that. Not saying it’s equal. But VolNation always harps on first time coaches or coordinators. Fact is he has at least experienced the role even if at a lower level, and was successful. That’s a leg up on our last couple OC’s who were completely new to the role. Don’t get me wrong. I hope we go much more experienced than Friend.

His position group was beyond bad this season. Thats all I know about him.

Check the offensive line issues this season for the Vols.
Was that a talent issue or Friends coaching ability ? We did lose two starting lineman and the depth was a big problem. Were some of the lineman possibly of the type who did "Not buy in" as has been rumored here on Volnation. I do not know the real reason for the OL issues this year.

Considering how we’ve played the last few weeks I bet he has this gig locked up weeks ago.

Of the healthy remaining members of the O line, is there anyone you could point to to suggest they got better as the season went along?

I can't.

And if a coach can't get his players to buy in, then maybe that's partially a coaching problem as well.

I believe he was already( silently ) in at WKU before the Vanderbilt game, and that explains some of the results of that game.

This is interesting... so, it would be in Helton’s best interest if TN didnt make it to a bowl game (if he had the wku thing on lock down). It would give him a chance to get to work at new job without having to either leave tn before a bowl, or get a later start at new diggs. Very interesting. I dunno, i just wonder if he IS that kind of dude.
