Did he change the play?

Yes he changed the play. Watch this video comparing the two sneaks. Notice the straight ahead blocking on the first and how Trey Smith pulled on the second.
Then watch the fullback and running back (who was actually Crouch) break left towards the hole created by the pulling Smith. Not only did JG go rogue, he cost us 6, as Crouch would’ve walked through that hole.

Our coaching staff is really doing great in game things now. That was a beautifully drawn up TD run yet again nullified by an inept QB. This staff has come along way this season so far and we are a QB away from being a solid team.

Ok yes yes dumb but WHY on earth would be keep it?! Why would he even think that’s a good idea or that he’d get away with it or that it would work?! I’m trying so hard to make ANY sense of this JG choice. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
I still don't get it. Pruitt was highly pissed though and he's had JG's back all year. I'm convinced he went rogue but we need to put it behind us fast. We're lucky Tua suffered an ankle sprain or he'd have continued to pick us apart. Even if we had of scored we would have had to get another possession and convert a two just to get to overtime. We need to let JG, Pruitt, and Chaney sort it out and keep the media and their dumbazz opinions out of it. These 4th's and short yardage plays need to be worked on when you look back over the games we've played this season.

Maybe b/c he saw BM successfully sneak one earlier, and he wanted to be like BM ?? That's what make sense to me.

Methinks you're giving Tua way to much credit and our defensive staff and players not enough. Tua is great, but we MADE him look ordinary. He threw an INT under pressure while at his own end zone that we turned into a TD, a 14 point swing. We and his individual stats last night may have cost him the Heisman.

Perhaps I am. Don't know about other posters but I'm gonna blame it on long term BVS. Hopefully the cure is right around the corner........winning!

I think Pruitt will gnaw on him now until he leaves and good riddance
Pruitt's not that low. They may scheme around playing him in favor of Shrout though. As several posters have stated there's no trust now. I won't go as far as to say it's irreparable but it's dang close. Pruitt has this team thinking they can win every game and that's how champions think so we're good there. I'll be in Neyland for USCe and it won't be good a good look if they play him and I'm certain the crowd will chime in which will give us a bad look nationwide. Dude needs to publicly apologize just to limit the negative noise.

Pruitt covered for him in the press conference. Said he was upset that he stuck the ball out instead of pushed the line. Said he had an option to sneak but shouldn't have been so quick about the play, should have set up more.
That's why Pruitt is deemed a players coach. Many recruits will take notice plus they'll see how well UT has improved over 6 games and buy in. Optimism aside, things appear to be looking up. We'll know more this Sat. because SC is considered a physical type team this year. Should be a good game.

The better view is the one from directly above the field. I just watched it a bunch of times. It shows Trey Smith pulling and both backs headed to the left behind Trey and then suddenly stopping when they saw the idiot JG run into the line. If he runs the play, we probably score, and we have ourselves a ballgame with a mostly stalled Bama offense. He definitely went rogue. If CJP says otherwise, he's covering for JG for some reason.

Do we have any lip readers here? I'd love to know what CJP was saying to JG as he came off the field. I would have loved to have seen this game with BM at QB the whole way. Of course, I'm sure Bama fans would have loved to have seen it with Tua at QB the whole way.
Excellent post. Why in Sam hell would a QB call his own # at such a critical time? This NJ kid's been living in UT's fans heads rent free for far too long. He's history. Of course how this situation is unfolding is a revelation of just how caring coach Pruitt is to his own players and Pruitt didn't recruit JG. He's done everything he could possibly do to help this guy. The hole was there and Crouch was ready. Everyone on UT executed perfectly except JG. There's no doubt Pruitt is covering for him.

Exactly! He never changed the play. If he had communicated an audible to the other 10 guys on the field with him and the play was stuffed, so be it. But the fact that he let every other player try to execute the play call, while he selfishly, decided to play hero, is what pisses me off.
GBO!!
By the looks of that video Crouch would have ran to the Gulf Coast if JG had executed properly.

Yeah JG went rogue but the other 3 plays called were pretty stupid also -- as much on Chaney as JG
Yep. I was cussing Chaney during those plays. If you seriously want the score why not put Crouch in and run that play on 1st down? Why wait until 4th down? What's baffling is Bama players selling out on the sneak and the whole created by Smith for Crouch. Screwed-uppest play I've seen in a long time and don't make a lick of sense. Is JG trying to sabotage UT football or does his mind just go blank when he has to concentrate? Either way he doesn't need to be QBing UT in the future.

Jesus some of you complain about everything. What the hell does it matter if he changed the play? Good grief.
Because if the O-line was told one play and JG ran something else. The blocking will not be there. Also when the score was 21 - 13 JG missed a wide open guy in the end zone which could of made the score 21 - 20. People are just telling it like it is. JG is a tough guy no dought about that. He just is not a very good QB.

Its really weird to me seeing all of these responses to you about "its a team sport", you're usually the one preaching that to everyone.

And its really strange how you're always, and I mean always, putting most of the blame on the players not doing what they are supposed to be doing and defending the coaches.

This makes absolutely no sense dude. You okay?
I think he's taking what JG's been prescribed. Not like BOT to walk into a loaded gun which is what he did in this thread. I wish the hell none of this had never happened but it did and I saw it. It had a significant and direct bearing on the outcome of this game but BOT seems to think otherwise. The biggest deal is UT had momentum and a score there with plenty of time left would have given them much more momentum. That would have been a good thing in Bryant-Denny.

Because he had been benched in place of a freshman QB. JG wanted to be the hero so he called his own number so to speak.

here is the aerial shot. Watch Crouch just stop like he has no idea what just happened. This angle shows no doubt JG went rogue.

There is no way Pruitt can trot him out there again at this point. The fan base would be livid.

JG should have called time-out as soon as linebacker came into the gap. He did the exact same thing against GAST. In this video Crouch would have never gotten the ball because the LB, (May), was all over JG immediately. JG's been through this before and should have known the play was doomed because LB was on him immediately. I call it anticipation and the blocking scheme apparently needed changing to account for that LB coming in untouched. It doesn't matter what play was called, you account for that LBer or any play is doomed.

It shouldn't have taken 4 plays to punch that ball in. A time-out should have been called after 2nd attempt. Pruitt rarely does that because he senses that it gives the defense more time to prepare. I see both sides of the picture. This is something UT has to work on going forward if we're gonna contend. We haven' been that good on 4th downs this year. Just one FG against BYU would have changed the outcome in that game. We could have kicked 2 instead of trying for a 1st down.

Where in the world is K-town_king in all this discussion about his favorite QB? He said he prefers to go on stats and ability over moxie and practice.

Just curious his thoughts and how he will spin JG's unintentional bumbling efforts to single handedly prevent TN from winning.
Meticulously calculating completion percentage and now ypa and ypc. Using PFF for other contrived stats.

The video is damning. Gaping hole if JG can make the handoff (or even toss it back if he pivots left). Walk-in TD.

The end result, and Pruitt's reaction, end the debate here about what was supposed to happen there. It's obvious by the blocking scheme, the WTF reaction of the backs, and Pruitt's reaction on the sideline. JG went rogue. Simple as that.

Maybe the LB in the A gap caused him to go it alone. In any event, there was a TD still there, and JG...once again...killed a drive and left points on the field. Sorry, but it is what it is, which is the fact that Jarrett Guarantano is simply not an SEC QB.

His W/L record as a QB says it all. Forget the yards, completion %, TD/INT ratio, and what-have-you. Either you won, or you lost. His YPC has always been mediocre (short completions, but high %), and it's been YAC that made him look better than he really was. His record as a QB tells the tale, and it's not a good one. The SEC is simply too fast and complicated for him. I don't need to be proven right, but if I do, the NFL draft will do it. JG will still be on his couch when Mr. Irrelevant is drafted.

Tough kid. Talented athlete. Been a good Vol. It was his bad luck to be on a Vol team that needed a game-changer at QB, and that is a skill he simply does not possess. Wish him well moving forward; he showed up every day and played tough.

Go Vols.

Did JG change the play at the goal line?

If he didn't change it, what were they talking about for so long in the sideline? A fumble? Fumbles happen. Big deal. A terrible moment but... Put your game face on and move on. But if he changes the play (for what? The glory?) then that's a big problem. I think they were telling him he should have gone with the play-call and his time actively playing for Tennessee is done. That's what I think.
