“Was” being the operative word. I think Phil “was” a very good coach, who got distracted, arrogant and lazy. I think he failed to upgrade his staff when given the opportunity, or allow his assistants to enforce discipline. He wasn’t the same without Dickey there to mentor him. He was more concerned with Bama cheating than he was with his own house. There was little Phil had to do than find quality capable assistants and let them work.
More or less I would agree with most of that.

I cannot answer this poll question, for Phil didn't appoint himself to AD. Did the Chancellor and Board place too high of a value on Phil? Yes, I think they thought/hope his skills on the field would carry over to the boardroom. Most of us know from practical experience, that this is a rare occurrence.
I always thought she appointed him to stave off her upcoming firing by thinking those in charge would be content.

I do absolutely believe Fulmer loved Tennessee…. Just not as much as he loved himself.

He was a good coach with great assistants. He had no business ever being AD.

I’ve spent paragraphs and posts over a decade on my feelings about Fulmer and you summed it up in about 30 words perfectly

Yep… There’s a reason why schools stopped naming the head football coach the Athletic Director about 30 years ago. It’s two totally different skill sets.

Probably was a sign he didn’t have a clue what we was doing when Rick Barnes had to publicly get himself in trouble by telling the media he had to pay his assistants money from his own damned pockets

Fulmer peaked in ‘98, a culmination of momentum garnered from Major’s last years winning the SEC twice in three years, a couple of star-studded recruiting classes in ‘94/95 with a lot of help from prime Rodney Gardner, a master O-Coordinator that understood the how a great running game set up the long pass (Peerless), and a great team leader in Al Wilson who willed us to win that ‘98 Florida game. Fulmer put it together with great organization skills and practices honed to perfection— his greatest asset outside of recruiting. When all those pieces left after ‘98, it unraveled for him, starting with the defeat to LSU in the ‘01 SEC title game. He should have resigned in ’05 after the loss to Vandy, but he hung on too long as a lot of legends do. He should’ve groomed Cutcliff for a coach-in-waiting position or hired him back when he got fired by Ole Miss. His ego led to his downfall along with aging faster than normal, physically and mentally, losing his edge on the recruiting trail especially.

Does it seem to anyone Fulmer still thinks people owe him something? I know he was paid tens of millions but, does he still think he is owed something?

He should’ve stepped aside after the 5-6 season in 2005. I believe we started ranked 3rd in the preseason polls that year and finished with our first losing season since 1988 but no he hung around and gave us another losing season in 2008.
This is my sentiments exactly. That loss to Vandy in 2005 was the end of our glory reputation. Many thought the downhill slide started with the 2001 SEC Championship game.

How many championships did Fulmer win in 17 years with all of that talent? We would have never won another with Fulmer. Saban, Meyer, and Spurrier were all in a different league from Fulmer. So….

A drunk rhesus monkey could have won a natty with that talent. That’s what my post earlier was about. He was a great recruiter, but just a good coach, that will get you a championship but it won’t put you in the all time greats category

I remember towards the end as losses began to pile up, he started with the excuse “we didn’t get the breaks” as though he was relying on turnovers and penalties to solely win games.

I remember when I got to meet him in Columbia when I was Drill Sergeant (at a basketball game). I also got to meet coach Pearl after the game.

I don't recall who I got the tickets from here (I was a row in front of Phil). That's a day I'll never forget.
