i don't know who he seriously looked at, but Marrone and Brown who were thought to be serious contenders for the job both currently employed in the NFL...

Phil knew he couldn't wait until January to hire someone....can't lose December from a recruiting standpoint.

He probably had a short list, went thru it, and Cut just "fit".

no doubt though that he was the #1 from the get go....and that's not a bad thing, it's just not something we should or would get all excited about....

In the press conference last night CPF said he had "around 5 people on the list of possible OCs" but I kinda doubt it. You're exactly right, if he was going to hire a number of the choices where in the NFL and weren't going to be able to get out of their current contract until December/January.

I guess CUTT just fit in perfect and I really believe he'll make a positive change in our VOLS :cross:

Basically time and trust were the two big ones. He could have shopped around longer but few others were readily available.

We don't know the whole story. I imagine we were hurting on the recruiting front and he needed some solidity right quick to get back on track.

Cut was ready to go with no other commitments to hinder him. He's watched our system all season and already knows what he's working with and what needs to be done. Fulmer and Cut know each other so that makes the trust and understanding issue less a biggie.

Basically from Fulmer's standpoint, all of the big issues that you'd apply to hiring an OC were bested by hiring Cut.

Im not so sure he really had to look. A vacancy at the University of Tennesse sells on its own. If coach Cut had decided else, names would be popping up for potential hires by this point. Now the position coach hires should fall right into place. Steve Caldwell is no longer ST's& DE coach, just DE's. A special teams only hire is long overdue, Dale Jones???Has a nice ring to it. :cross:

Personally I think all the talk about looking at several candidates was always BS. Cut was the man, and if he said No for some reason, then CPF would have looked elsewhere.

Just thinking out loud with a conspiracy theory here..but do you think that Cut was hired just to hold the position until Kippy Brown could get on board through this recruiting season and then Cut will take off to Ark. Was it a two year contract with a clause? Do you think that Frank Broyles and Mike Hamilton have had any phone conversations lately?

National search...... right. If you believe that then I have some ocean front property for sale in Arizona!!!!!!!

I just wish Fulmer did not spout off about a National Search....... He could have very easily and TRUTHFULLY said that he was going to look for a coach who had UT ties.

Why did he have to spin it. I think that it was dishonest and disingenuous to talk about a national search. Cut was his pick all along. He just had to wait and see if Cut got a head coaching job to announce his decision.
