Did Dickey force John Ward Out?

Where did you hear this? Ward lived down the street from my grandfather and was good friends with him so I had many run-ins with John Ward and he had been nothing but kind and visited my grandfather frequently when he became sick. I've been in the Ward home before and nothing I've seen or experienced when talking to him or being in his house would ever hint at anything like this.

that is exactly what I have heard from people who have known him longer than I have been in the world. He is a loyal, and kind person who loves Tennessee and I think his life has proven it

Exactly. I swear I think some people sit around and make stuff up just to post. Idiots is to nice of a name to use killer but board rules prevent us from calling them what they really are.

Kind of like this thread.:ermm:

Unless I've missed something it was off the mark from the beginning.

I will also add this. As much as I cant stand Dickey he had nothing to do with JW. But there are plenty other reasons to hate Dickey so dont let this myth stop you from a well deserved hatred of DD.

Doug Dickey had NOTHING to do with John's retirement. John stated many years ago that he would step down when he felt that he was no longer performing @ the top of his game. When he decided to retire he stated that it was because he no longer was performing @ the level he had been doing in the past.

Agreed. In fact, Dickey talked JW into broadcasting one more year. JW wanted to fade away without the last year "memory" tour. Dickey told him it would be unfair to the sponsors/advertisers that had already booked time on the games.

The TRUTH is that John wanted to step down the day of his announcement and never call another game. Dickey, over the course of several weeks, convinced him to return for the 1998/1999 school year.

So, in short, no, Dickey did NOT chase him out.

I agree about how bad Kesling is. I listened to mostly every game in 1999 and 2000 but since then I bet I haven't listened to more than a handful of games, and that was only because I was driving and had little choice.

I agree also Kesling is trying so hard to make "into the checkerboards" his catchphrase. I remember the first couple of years he tried something like he'd say "into the endzone...touchdown Travis Henry, touchdown Tennessee". He would always say the name of the player who scored then "touchdown Tennessee". I don't recall when he dropped it but it seemed like he was forcing that one too.

I totally agree about basketball being better because of Bert. He's like our version of Ron Santo....obviously a Vol homer but not so bad that it comes across as crossing a line. He doesn't seem afraid to butt in on Kesling either. Kesling is horrible with names....I remember when one game someone slammed home a rebound and he said "Bradshaw slams it home!!"...yeah ok Bob.

I used to want Mike Keith to come back and do UT play by play but I've really grown to hate his voice and style.

that's the party line that UT wants the fans to believe... I have a friend who I trust, and he says differently... believe what you will...
