Did Cuonzo not learn anything from Keady?

Gene Heady was a great motivational leader as a coach so you would think Cuonzo would have learned at least a little bit about how to motivate as a coach but apparently he has not.

I like Cuonzo as a person. His personal story shows that he has a lot of fine qualities. Unfortunately I don't think coaching ability is one of them. I felt the same way towards Buzz.

Lets get this straight. Do not compare Martin to Buzz. I was at UT when Buzz started. While I liked the guy and actually thought he got some bad luck, he couldn't win any big game.

Martin isn't close to a Buzz Peterson. But, he needs to win next year.

Gene Keady had a combover and never won much of anything that involved a tournament.

Keady showed more fire and emotion in a 2 min span than Cuonzo has since he's been at UT. Players take on the personality of their coach.

I never liked Gene Keady.

I am not going to start liking him because one of his ex players is coaching UT.

Yeah being a native Boiler, Keady was a mainstay on our TV for twenty years, and Cuonzo really doesn't fit the same style at all. I was excited when he was first hired because I had hoped he would bring the defensive mind but add some offensive flare. I'm not saying he's terrible but I'm not all that convinced he's going to hack it either.

Keady was a great coach, but he was like Fulmer in a way. The game passed him by and he never adapted. He loved to eat the clock, so his offense consisted of passing for 30 seconds and then shooting, hoping to draw a foul. What really hurt, was when Frank Kendrick was caught with his hand in the recruiting cookie jar, and was the scapegoat. Once he was gone the recruiting all but dried up. Before 2000 winning 20-25 games was just the norm, but once tournament time hit, they'd just suck it up big time. Heck we didn't even make it past the second round when we were a 1 seed. As much as I hate to admit it, his coaching tree is pretty weak. I just hope Cuonzo can find his groove next year and things can hum. However, I'm not holding my breath either.

and if you wonder why one example is that no one by that name ever coached purdue...seriously this is not difficult

He will win next year - it will be difficult for him not to if Maymon is back -- but the year after and three years from now - the jury is definitely out - he has a lot of pieces that don't seem to fit together very well and a lot of guys that can't shoot. Coaching and adjusting ?????

Cuonzo has one year to show that he's worth keeping...I see a lot to build a program with and if both Stokes and McRae return to go along with Hubbs this team will be as talented as it has ever been in the last five years. I hope he has the talent to make his attempt because anything less than a NCAA tourney bid has us searching for a new leader.

Mediocre team with adequate coaching is how I would characterize what we experienced this year. I thought Stokes would turn into a beast but his offense is not developed. Can't say I followed Purdue and Keady but I always thought of them as at the top of the middle of the pack in their conference. I continue to be amazed at how none of us (Bama, SC, esp UGA) can put together a consistently good team.

If he is as boring & monotonistic in practice & the locker room as he is in interviews, its easy to see why we dont play with any spirit or drive. I don't think Counzo could motivate a mosquito to bite!
