Hey all good teams get the breaks when its their time...That was just our time...He got his revenge the next year so the lambs stopped crying lol

Not to mention that John Cooper probably would have won the 1998 national title instead, Ohio State doesn't hire Jim Tressel, etc. etc.

Several plays that year that were lucky. I'm glad that it was our turn to win a NC, as you said. I remember the pass interference against Syracuse that kept the drive alive in the 4th q.

That Stoerner fumble extended his reign by at least 6-7 years. Amazing how one moment in time changes things so drastically.

We had 37 players on our 1998 team, that went on to play at least for a season in the NFL..........37........you do the math........how many do we have now?? not even close to 37 people.........our program is nowhere NEAR 1998 in talent level right now........

Yes, we were lucky at HECK, even with all that talent, a dumb "play not to lose" approach barely even worked........how many Arkansas players went to the NFL off of their team?? not even half of that, i'm sure.....

we should haev know then, that if Fulmer's recruiting even suffered, he would get WASTED..........and that was be4 Clawson got here, a TOTAL dud for an OC......

Yes we had some luck no doubt,but Stoerner didn't just go OOOPS and drop it,one of the Tennessee lineman knocked Brandon Burlsworth backwards and Brandons leg tripped Clint,so IMO that's a forced turnover.He didn't just fall over a blade of grass,or trip on a yard line.

On a very sad note,Brandon Burlsworth was killed in a vehicle accident a few months later.....just a few days after being drafted. RIP Brandon

actually the running of Travis Henry on the next drive saved his job. Stoerner didn't just drop the ball but TH ran the ball down their throats on every play going to the endzone

I remember a lot of ALMOST success in the years leading up to the NC in '98. There were grumbles about CPF not being able to win the big games. The NC set him up for continued coaching. imo

Why not go to game one against syracuse when we got the 4th down pass interference to keep the drive alive for the game-winning kick.

If Stoerner saved it, did Ainge's pick lose it? It's football...stuff happens every game. Teams get breaks. You point to the body of work, not one game.

When you win a national title, you automatically get 5 more years, no matter what the record. Phil got 10 more, with mediocre results in most.

Watching the video embedded in that article reaffirmed what TN football could and should be like. Damn that was a hell of an effort by T. Henry.

I'm not directing this at you, but there is a lot of talk about us not having the talent we had in the 90s. What most people leave out of that statement is that no team in the country has as much talent as we had at that time. So when it is said that we are not winning because we don't have as much talent as we had then, that is a direct indictment on the coaching staff. Because if you have to have that much talent to be competitive, you really are doing a poor job coaching.

It reminds me of a few of the Miami, FSU, FL, and USC teams of that 90s and early 00s. Every once in a while you get a little luck: a bunch of great players land on the same team at the right time. However, no one can consistently duplicate that.

That was a hell of an effort by Billy Ratliff. I asked him the whole story about that game last year....it was interesting.

If Brandon Burlsworth hadn't had his life cut short prematurely, the only questions we'd have about him would be whether his bronze bust at the Hall of Fame in Canton would feature the Drew Carey glasses or not.

No man that was a great year for you guys. I have some good friends who are UT fans and I got us tickets for that Arky game and while that play was pivitol that wasn't the only play that led to the victory.

Travis Henry was exceptional as was Al Wilson that whole game.

You can't pinpoint it on that one game b/c the Syracuse game was close as was several others. That is what championship teams do. They find a way to win close games.

Yep,he was a future great line man,that happened to get beat back pretty hard on that play,but having said that I still think he would have been one of the all time greats.

Yeah,I'm glad we got the ball back because of that series of mistakes,but,more than anything I would like both Arkansas &Tennessee players/fans to always remember that Brandon was good man,and did have a super NFL career ahead of him.THIS IS WHAT SEC FOOTBALL SHOULD BE ABOUT,not all the hating at each other.


PS. I choose the Drew Carey glasses on him.

Bingo,jut like Colorado has a 5TH DOWN against Mizzou,and OSU had a pass interference call that was questionable at best.
Basically to survive a full football season you have to have some divine intervintion.Thre is no such thig as luck really.
