DG's TL;DR Takeaways from the Charlotte Game

Not at all. The D played spectacular in the 2nd half. Best I've seen our D-line look all season. Albeit, it's UNCC and not an SEC team, but effort certainly wasn't the issue.

This O-line is just not strong enough. Has little to do with effort. We need more guys there and the guys who we are playing need another offseason of S&C; they really weren't ready to start yet. That's the entire story as to why we struggled.

I'm just finding it very difficult to believe that 3 and 4 star guys are struggling against much less talented players.

I'll take your word for it they didn't quit if you watched the game. If they struggle this badly against a cupcake they aren't going to be the solution in a year or two either IMO.

I strongly disagree with you with the no “year 2 surge”. Schedule is favorable and the entire offense returns. The oline by default just has to be better or the coaches aren’t doing their job. The secondary will be good, LBs solid, and the D-Line is concerning but I think they’ll surprise people next year. While I agree we won’t hace the depth to win the SEC east or any championships, we will still be a 8-9 win team that competes.

Great assessment as always. I too think Helton has done an outstanding job with the roster he has.

This is Year Zero. Pruitt inherited the worst roster in the SEC - likely mid-level Conference USA at best. There are no short cuts. The offensive line struggled vs. ETSU. Defensive line depth next season is a real concern. Making a bowl game next season and stacking 3 quality recruiting classes together could get the Vols back in business by 2020. Fans need to chill out and if somehow Pruitt and his staff were to coach this squad to bowl eligibility in 2018 - that is a phenomenal achievement.

It reminds me some of Majors' first season. The squad plays hard - they are just woefully deficient in quality and depth in crucial positions.

Agree with the assessment and feel good about the 2019 Roster Excluding both O and D Lines. I am hoping the two units can be average next year and we have skill players surrounding them. Potential positives.
- We should be primarily in a 3-4 next year with what should be an impressive group of Linebackers (Bituli, Peterson, Taylor....)
- Gooden is a big boy an should be solid at NT
- Elite recruits these days can often step right in, especially if early enrollees. I would guess perhaps 2 Freshman OL are immediate upgrades
