Sorry about missing last week. That game was quite depressing and I was slammed with work. Back this week, with some quick thoughts.

The Game

Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes. It's been the running theme of this season with the exception of the ETSU game. We constantly shoot ourselves in the foot. We were better this game than last, but still too many costly penalties.

Playcalling was too conservative. I thought Pruitt's gameplan was too conservative. After last weeks' debacle, I think Pruitt wanted to be less adventurous with the offense, but that doesn't work against the #2 team in the country. JG is our best weapon right now. We have to air it out and throw deep to beat a team of Georgia's caliber. We started doing this a bit in the 2nd Half, but it was too late. Of course, it should be noted that our playcalling is limited to some extent by our O-line, but I thought we went too conservative this week.

Helton is the new scapegoat, but I'm happy with him. Last season, JG was the easy scapegoat, in spite of being the least of our troubles on offense. This season, it seems like Helton has replaced JG as the easy scapegoat. Our offensive production has improved significantly under Helton and in a short period of time. The problems have been execution and O-line blocking. Not saying Helton is perfect, but he's far from the problem right now. Our offense is extremely limited due to personnel on the O-line.

We're getting better on defense. It's happening slowly, but I'm seeing steady improvement on D, which is a good sign. Against WV, our defenders reacted too slowly in the new defense. Our guys are getting comfortable now. We're seeing a pass rush emerge. Darrell Taylor is looking pretty good again. Kyle Phillips had a good game and the secondary is starting to play well. But ...

Run D is still a major issue. While the D is playing better overall, Georgia was able to impose its will on us running the ball at the end of the game. This is IMO partly a depth issue, but also probably a sign that we don't have the power up front.

Ty Chandler. Happy to see him being utilized in the passing game finally. He's a threat there and our coaches should be taking advantage of that.

Trevon Flowers. Ended up being an irrelevant play (offsides), but quite an impression interception by Flowers.

Other Thoughts

The curse. We've had some bad luck this season. That fumble that turned into a long TD run for Georgia is one of the flukiest plays I can ever remember seeing. Then the Pope goal line fumble. Not that we would've won either game regardless, but just adds insult to injury when luck is also against you.

It's going to take some 'cruiting. The reality is that we don't have the horses up front to do what we need to be able to do. That's only going to change with recruiting.

Dumb thoughts. There's some dumb part of my brain that still thinks we can pull off an upset or two (at this point, a win over anyone other than Charlotte is an "upset" mind you), but the rational part of my brain says 4-8 or 5-7.

On the other hand. Unlike last season where our offense was just completely stagnant, this season, it's at least been productive. 360+ yards versus Florida *IN SPITE OF* 6 turnovers. 512 yards versus UTEP. When we don't go into a conservative shell (like we did in the 1st half this game), we can move the ball. We just keep making big mistakes. Eliminate the mistakes and this team could be competitive. If we could play a relatively mistake-free game, we could pull an upset over anyone else on the schedule not named Alabama.

Im'ma stay positive. I'm resigned to the fact that we suck this season, but I'm seeing improvement overall. Our players continue to fight. I like that. That's what I'm going to continue to look for the rest of the season.

GBO!

P.S. Any way for anyone to add the official UT orange hex code for the colored text on here? I always have to search for it on Google (HEX FF8200).

The boys have been playing OVC football for years with Josh Dobbs the only reason we haven't had consecutive winless SEC seasons. They look like they are starting to learn SEC football again. Pruitt and Co are getting it done but there is no magic shower discipline or Rommel sighting or brick outhouse that can make it happen overnight and against Top 10 teams. The big question mark around Pruitt and his staff is will they be able to recruit at an SEC elite level.

The orange shoots of recovery are visible. If the recruiting class is top third SEC, we are on our way up. We were at rock bottom so not many places left to go. A signature win this year with a group thoroughly demoralized by Botch will be to spoil KY's season. That's not a great place but we have to relearn how to beat Vandy and KY.

Im'ma stay positive too, DG !

To me, this was a fun, competitive game to watch (our 1st qtr offense looked slow, if I recall correctly). And yeah, the ball took a favorable bounce for GA on the strip, but that's the way it goes (gotta tackle whoever picks it up).

Banks fumbled, so ok -- he's a fighter.

JG and OL looked good / much, much better.

I think they guys played pretty well. But, I also suspect Kirby took his foot off the pedal once he knew where we were. Partly, out of respect for Jeremy, and partly not to show his hand to future opponents. I enjoyed the game, except for the losing part and the mistakes - by the team and the officials. Both are getting boring.

I still believe that a lot of our problems are S&C. Arm tackles are broken and tackles in general past the line of scrimmage are not being made. I watched closely at the Ga. O-line vs. our D-line, and you can clearly see that the lower bodies of the Ga. O-line was much bigger than the lower bodies of our D-line. Until the S&C is corrected we will have trouble with bigger teams.

Yep. Too many mistakes and D was gassed by end of game but checks many of the boxes I wanted to see in regards to effort. It wasn’t the total beat down I anticipated.

I think the overall team speed is slow as well. Can't outrun other players on offense, and can't catch up on defense. Still, I enjoyed their effort and grit by some of them.

It looked like in the 1st half we coached not to lose by 50...... Vs teams like bama, uga, and AU, We have nothing to lose, open the playbook, throw the ball, and never punt!!

Yes. Reminds me of 2005 (we really seemed snake bit that whole season, not just the fumble against Bama) and also the bowl game against Penn St (don’t remember year) where every ridiculous thing you could never even imagine happened - like a fumble on a snap goes up in the air, lands in a lineman or lb’s hands and runs for TD. That play yesterday was unbelievable. Enjoy your thoughts every week, DG.

You're right. Not fair to compare him to hot dogs since they actually satisfy fans at games.

I guess you really don’t understand how childish and juvenile you sound. We ALL get how intense your hatred of all things JG is, but it’s gettinga little weird. Maybe you have other football topics you’d like to discuss?

We are just painfully slow on defense. We aren’t able to square up and tackle and end up tackling from the side or behind.

Guarantano needs to run more. IMO
I agree we're somewhat slow. Watching us try to tackle make me think of two hands below the belt kids games.
Speaking of speed Ky. really looks fast. They gonna be really tough.

Not to disagree, but in posts above "speed" is discussed as part of the tackling problem. If you are a little slow, just one step, you will be tackling from the side or arm tackling, head on or from a good angle. (I know this is not the only cause, I just don't think we have been taught to tackle correctly over the years.

I will argue with you all day and night long. Our O-line is just not good and looks as bad now as this time last year. I don't like saying that but that's the way I see it. On the other hand if Ga's d-line is a world beater, then maybe we played a little better in this game than others. However it is still not good enough to open any play book. I like you did enjoy watching the whole game. Refreshing change from most games lately>

I think for the first time this season I saw what the team could be for about a quarter. After the Georgia drive that put them up 24-0, I actually saw the team play for about 15 mins of what this team could be. On Offense, it is really about getting an OL through recruiting. On D it is depth. I thought the secondary didn't play bad. I think the DL got worn down at the end and the last two drives.

I can see them beating Charlotte. Then Vandy, Kentucky, USCe we have a chance, but don't see us winning all 3. Mizzou seems like a bad matchup for us like WVU.

As long as we keep out OL recruits and possibly add one more it would address a glaring need. Same for DL

Yeah, I keep coming to this conclusion myself. Not to say that we don't need to recruit better players, but I just think we are still not getting our money's worth in S & C for some reason.

I dont hate JG. He just isn't a good QB. Your rushing to his defense week after week literally proves that. That is weird.
