Finalists for the best overall defensive player award are:

Myles Garrett (30 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 14 tfl)
Jonathan Allen (45 tackles, 7 sacks, 9.5 tfl)
Jabrill Peppers (65 tackles, 4 sacks, 16 tfl, 3 rush td)

For reference:
Barnett (48 tackles, 17tfl, 11 sacks, 1 int).

This really depreciates the value of the award. Barnett deserves to be there. Nonetheless, he's gonna get his payday real soon. Gonna miss this guy for sure.

I don't normally care too much about individual post-season awards, but that is really bad. That being said, Peppers will probably run away with it. I would expect ESPN to make a serious push for Peppers to get the Heisman, ala Woodson.

I should mention that 4.5 of Myles Garrett's 8.5 sacks came against UT-San Antonio. All 11 of DB's sacks came against SEC competition.

It's really a frustrating thing; the obsession with Garrett has surpassed unreal status. From what I've seen, the guy has NFL bust written all over him.

Barnett is the best DE in the country and his statistics prove it. Why is Garrett even on the list? Every time I watch aTm play he's hurt.

He will bust in the pros for sure. It's because he plays for the beloved aTm and anyone who plays for UT gets the shaft. (See: Manning 1997).

I agree with Allen and Peppers. Garrett getting it because of his hype coming out of hs and his hype from past couple years is bs. He barely even played this year. Garrett is a great player and might be better than Barnett, but when he's been hurt all year, and Barnett has far superior stats, you can't put him in over Barnett. Just another biased individual award like the Heisman to write off as meaningless.

Maybe our overall pathetic defensive showing hurt Barnett's chances? Guilt by association?

Not surprised. Most all of these awards are jokes. They usually tend to skew towards the best players on most of the best teams. I would about guarantee you if we only had 1 loss that he would be a finalist. But yes I do agree that having Garrett there over him is a joke.

Tn has historically had the worst PR department in the SEC. This reeks and we as alum, fans, and contributors should raise wholly hell about this departments incompetence. Damn this pissed me off and it has existed for years.

These awards are basically for whoever ESPN talk's for and about, has nothing to do with stats anymore...
Myles Garrett shouldn't be on the list just because he has missed playing time due to injury's..
All awards now should just be called...
ESPN Defensive player of the year
ESPN Offensive player of the year
etc..........

Ridiculous! I agree though. He will get that payday soon and that's what is best for him! Been a real pleasure watching him scare the hell out of opposing teams QB's these last 3 years!

Who didn't see this coming?

Garrett could take a dump and they'd chalk it up as a sack

I hope peppers wins. He's damn good

Considering the amount of hype and love Garrett has received all year relative to Barnett's, it's safe to say the Garrett is the most overrated defensive player in the country and Barnett is the most underrated. Totally stupid and lacking any credibility for Barnett to not be on the list.

The crazy thing about this is that the stat that looks even remotely gaudy on Peppers' stat sheet is the tackles for loss which is a pretty good number for a LB/DB hybrid but Barnett still gets the best of him in that area. I bet if you put Peppers' stats up next to other top LBs or DBs they aren't that impressive.

Oh and by the way Barnett has more interceptions, forced fumbles and pass break ups from the DE position!

So he wins in stats the next argument could possibly be Peppers has an ability to take over a game for his team. If that's the case the voters clearly haven't seen his 2nd half play from Florida and Georgia. Dude can put the team on his back and say let's ride!

These postseason awards are turning into nothing but a media beauty contest like the Heisman which is sad to see.
