Derek Barnett

Even while he recovered from a shoulder injury during bowl game preparation, he was in the ear of defensive line coach Steve Stripling, telling him, "When I'm feeling better, I want to play over that left tackle." That left tackle being Iowa's Brandon Scherff, the 319-pound senior and No. 5 overall NFL pick.

While the rest of the team celebrated a win over Virginia Tech earlier this season, Barnett was subdued, worried about the mistakes he'd made. After beating Georgia on a Hail Mary pass a few weeks ago, Barnett spoke in the locker room and barely mentioned what a great win it was. He told the defense the same big plays they gave up to Georgia were the same plays they were giving up in practice.

Earlier, with the Vols trailing 24-21 in the fourth quarter, he told a coaching assistant on the sideline, "We have to score on defense and get this done." Then he went out, read pass, widened out his stance, pinned back his ears and attacked Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason. Barnett got around a tight end, ducked inside on a chip from the running back and sacked Eason, forcing a fumble that was recovered for a touchdown.

On when first talking with Shoop when he arrived at TN as the new Def Coordinator...

"We need to take this to the next level, Coach," Barnett said. "We can't be soft on these guys. We have to be hard on them.

"I'll help you do that."

Love the leadership.

That writeup says a lot about db. "I'm a momma boy". The first and only time my wife said that to me I said "Well yeah. She raised me. You say that like it's a bad thing". She realized I was proud of it.

Great article but the pic of the two players holding the B@B trophy is not Barnett like the writer states. It's Malone and Martin. Lazy journalism.

I hear ya....and I'm a Barnett fan. He'll make big $$ in the NFL for years. He's a VFL no doubt.

But....

The aTm QB did drag him into the end-zone for the go-ahead score. Stop him at the one, and they probably kick a FG. The pressure on UT lessons and we perhaps win the game.

Barnett is genuinely impressive.

Cam Robinson has a bad habit of picking a game or two to stink up each year. If Saturday is one of those games, then Hurts better roll out right on every play or he'll be the victim of an on-field homicide.

No offense to any of those guys, but I'm worrying about Barnett first. If someone wants to claim he's the best player on either team, I will not argue with him.
