KNOXVILLE — Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoop meets every Monday with his players to review tape of the previous week’s game. Shoop shows them the "good, bad and ugly" in segments of each quarter.

But things changed a bit this week. For plays 47 through 52 against Florida, there was only good for the Vols. The bad and ugly were left to the Florida offensive front.

"I showed five straight snaps of Derek Barnett just taking the game over at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter," Shoop said on Wednesday. Barnett wreaked havoc on the Gators as Tennessee staged a remarkable second-half comeback to beat Florida 38-28 and snap an 11-game losing streak in the rivalry.

"He’s been an inspiration to everybody. He’s the alpha in the group and everybody follows his lead," Tennessee defensive line coach Steve Stripling said. "We went to a very detailed rep count in the second half and he just looked at me and said ‘I’m not coming off the field,’ so I said, ‘OK, you’re not coming off the field.’ He’s the leader of the group."

//snip

"From a physical standpoint and a competitive standpoint it’s not surprising at all. That is who he is," Brentwood Academy football coach and athletic director Cody White said. "He is a really good kid and worked hard for us and really pushed himself academically and athletically. I think what he is doing is really reaping the fruits of that labor and coach Jones and those guys have done a good job bringing it out of him."

//snip

Tennessee will expect nothing less from Barnett against Georgia. During practice on Tuesday, the coaching staff considered cutting a few repetitions from a period but Barnett wouldn’t allow it, telling Shoop, "No. We need this. Let’s go."

"I can’t say enough about Derek Barnett," Shoop said. "I know there are other players that might get more recognition, but that guys means as much to this team, to this unit as any player on any team on any unit. He is the heart and soul."

Wasn't he committed to Vandy but changed after CBJ made a strong push for him?

I don't think he was ever committed to them but it was believed that they led because his mother worked for Vanderbilt. Ole Miss and Missouri also made late pushes for him. Looking back, it's kind of funny that Dewayne Hendrix was thought to be so much better.

Such a "workman attitude" which is SO needed in the trenches. Glad he is spreading that around!

Not sure we have had an Alpha male on defense of this caliber and intensity since Al Wilson. This could be significant.

And watching that game against UF, I think we have alphas all over the field on defense.

He has been our warrior.
Missing Sutton, JRM, and Kirkland should have been a death blow to our defense.
But, Barnett and several others, under Shhops leadership, said to hell with that idea.

DB should be getting more national recognition IMO. Hopefully in the next 3 weeks on big stages he will make his hay. As usual it was kinda a slow start for him but as the Dline has showed up DB has got going. He had a big game vs Ohio and the 2nd half vs UF the game became his. Dominate performance by another Tennessee bred wrecking ball!

Derek Barnett = Al Wilson 2.0 (no - there will only be one Al Wilson)

We need the D line to step up with the guys we are missing behind them. Pressure from the line will help the play of the younger players filling in. You could see how well everyone played when the D line was getting consistent pressure in the 2nd half.

Does DB have an inside spin move? I haven't looked for it specifically so don't recall, but if he could get the tackle thinking he's always going around the outside, then bust an inside spin i think he could rack up even more sacks.

I know many people love seeing high scoring offenses, but to me there is nothing like a defensive player completely taking over a game. Whether it's a DE or a LB it's truly amazing to watch. DB has put so much pressure on QB's this year.

I was watching the SEC channel (can't remember the name of the program) where DB was looking at film with David Greene. DB was explaining his technique of staying low and offering the smallest amount of target for an OL to block. Either Jones or Stripling was quoted as saying his technique was the result of countless repetitions.

I'm awfully glad we have him leading the charge. The impact of players like him can't be measured only by on field results. The ripple effect he has upon the younger players will bring more leaders on to the field in future seasons.
