Denial on the hill...Chavis: 3rd and Long

You're in denial.

UF didn't get many yards because they didn't need to, given the crazy field position our "special" teams gave up.

UGA is a great example: a 97 yard drive to close the first half and a long, long scoring drive after opting out of a 4th and short/punt situation late in the game.

My wish is on keeping Clawson and bringing in a defensively-oriented HC. We'll see.

Please reread what I've written. What am I in denial about? I've said the offense is the best of our three units, but that doesn't make them good.

Also, I have seen absolutely no indication that Dave Clawson has contributed anything positive to this football team. Every single position on offense has underperformed.

We need a new OL coach worse than anything. By the time the last georgia drive started they had like 3 sophs and 2 freshmen on the o-line and they still ran off a 17 play drive. theres no way there talent level is that far above ours.

Well there you go. Hard defending anything with this team this year but D is the brighter side of what's going on.

I agree it has been the brighest point this season. I would just want to yell at the tv or radio every time they talked about how good our D has been this because obviously they forgot about the 2nd half of the UCLA game and IMO i think the D played like $hit against NIU.

the thing i don't understand is we probably have one of the best safety combos in the NCAA and we continue to line up our corners in loose coverage for fear of getting beat deep. i would like the coaches to have some confidence in our secondary and do bump n run and tighten up the corners.

Defense had to spend 43 minutes on the field vs UGA. Lot of time also vs UF. Overall they are not the problem and are doing a decent job.

Our defense would spend a lot less time on the field if they could stop anyone on 3rd down and if they didn't commit so many penalties resulting in first downs for our opponents.

While I'm not one to defend chavis (we call it "3rd and Chavis" for a reason). This year, it would help if the offense could stay on the field for more than three plays a drive.

Yes, but the defense has to get itself off the field, too. Georgia punted one time. That is not going to do it.

My apologies to the defense. After watching them live for the second time last night, that unit is good enough for us to be a conference contender. They have two terrific players, and a bunch of other guys doing their jobs pretty well without any help whatsoever from the other side of the ball. With an offense as bad as ours, giving up 2 touchdowns means an automatic loss, so shortening the game and not giving up big plays become the focus, and they have done an admirable job of that despite having to spend much too much time on the field.

If the offense could have produced 1/3 of what the defense has this year, we would not be staring down the barrell of spending the holidays in Shreveport or, worse, at home.

Our defense is pretty good. But they aren't good enough against the better teams. Even with an average SEC offense we'd be sucking wind, IMO.

Georgia and Florida would still run up and down the field on us most of the time.

The biggest, obvious difference is that we would have won the UCLA and AUB games, which would have brought us to 5-3 instead of 3-5. So yes, I would agree with you conceptually.

I will say after the GA game the defense has changed somewhat. We still play toooo far of on the safety but I have seen better blitz packages and more schemes sense chavis went to the booth.
