Defensive Talent

the defense will bring back a lot of talent next season. Ayers and most likely Martin will be our starting DEs, Williams and Bolden at DT with Donald Langley, Brimfield (if he doesn't move to OL), Cody Pope (if he doesn't move back to OL), Walter Fisher, Chase Nelson, Andre Mathis and possibly Chris Walker on the line. We'll have Mayo, McCoy, Wilson, Donald, McKenzie at LB. The secondary will return Berry, Vinson, Johnson, Willingham and Kemp.. throw in Art Evans, Rogan, Anthony Anderson and Maples and there will be talent there, just still fairly young. I think we have the talent, just lack experience and good teaching of fundamentals.

I agree there is alot of potential there. But thats what it is potential and we can't seem to get the most out of our kids for some reason. Cough(phil):)

I haven't had time to look for stats on the age of our players on D'...but, I'm sure 1/2 are juniors or less......Have we all forgotten this game is played with 19 - 24 year old kids....ever though they are big as a barn!!!

Oh how soon you forget! Do you guys not remember that at the start of the season most posts went like this. O'neal and Vinson are gonna be superstar receivers, McKenzie and Willingham are gonna be studs in the secondary, etc. etc. etc. None of that has happened. Quit pegging these kids as superstars before they even play a down because I start falling for all the hype and actually start thinking we have a chance to be good.

Then form an opinion on your own. Believing everything you read on a message board has got to be detrimental to common sense :p

There is something to be said about TN averaging top 10 recruiting classes(I say average b/c one of you will immediately pull out 05' when we were not top 10) the last several years and this talent that we are getting not performing. Some say that the recruiting services(i.e. Rivals, Scout) are getting the ratings wrong. If that's the case why are the 5* players that FL, So Cal, OSU, etc. are getting performing like a 5* player should.

The fans of these respective schools are/were praising these 5* players and predicting great things the same way we were doing with Vinson, Berry, McKenzie, O'Neal, etc. Only difference is their 5* players are/have played like 5* players should. This new crop of highly rated players does deserve their fair shake. My point is not necessarily talking about them. I'm talking more about the past few years.

Take a look back at the highly touted players we've gotten and compare how they did to the highly touted players the other big name schools have gotten. And if you can/want to go even more in depth, look at when these highly touted players saw meaningful game action. Cause with us I'd say the greater percentage of the time their first two years the only action they see is in blowout wins, and we haven't had too many of those. but that's okay b/c per Fulmer "They are practicing hard and are putting in alot of effort, but our system is just too complicated and they just aren't there yet".

We are going to go to the Music City/Liberty/Chick-fila bowl if we go to one at all, so why not just put the playmakers that were so highly touted but just can't pick up the system out there and let them make the mistakes. They will learn from them and we'll benefit in the long run(see Percy Harvin last year and this year). Sorry this was so long, I just started rolling with it.
