Defensive Statistical Improvement

OU lost their starting QB. Staring WR.
So what about their schedule? I'm talking about how our defense performed...
We played Florida Bama, MSU, and Vandy
So Did LSU.

Check the state line on those games and compare defenses...

We had the better defense. And we will next year too.

If you can't change my mind, then I suggest you just saddle up and watch my wisdom come to fruition....
OU always seems to lose their QB, and then replace them with a Heisman winner of a former Bammer that is pretty good.

The Vols ended 2018 with 77th ranked defense.

2019 they finished 23rd in Total Defense.
29th in Scoring Defense.

In Derrick Anselys first season as DC he created a Top 25 tier defense.

We lose Taylor, Bituli, and Warrior.
But the coaching duo of Ansley and Pruitt is the key to our defense imo.

With the added talent at every level I think we make the jump to Top 15 defense next season. We haven't been that since 2007...

2007! Eric Berry's freshman season and the last time we were in the SEC Title game.

It is now year 3 under Pruitt and there is talent and experience at every level of defense. I think we'll be the defense BEST in the SEC in 2020. Oklahoma will set the tone.

You are that delusional vol fan. You're mistaking passion & optimism for common sense. In fact I would be willing to say majority of this board would not call your ridiculous prediction .. wisdom. This happens every off season, regardless of the previous season we had, fans talk themselves into 10+ win seasons.

We got smoked by Florida, played a Tua-less Bama, and beat 2 below average teams in MSU, Vandy. The fact you're comparing our team, specifically our defense, to arguably the greatest college football team of all time is laughable. Did our defense play considerably better last year than they have in probably the last 10 years? YES. Are they going to take another step forward? TBD. Are they going to for sure shutdown/stop OU? LOL no.

OU lost Hurts & Lamb, I'm aware of that. Are you familiar with who else they have? They are absolutely loaded at WR. And they have a QB in Rattler that can sling the pigskin all over the field with a full off season ahead of him. Why would you think we would just automatically shut them down? I'm not trying to change your mind.. I'm just pointing out how delusional you are.
What if Rattler actually sucks? He only threw 11 passes last year. We don't know anything about him. Are they loaded at receiver? Lamb had more yards than their next three leading receivers combined. What if they don't actually progress? Recent history suggests that we're highly unlikely to shut them down, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think that our defense can have some success. Oklahoma basically did whatever they wanted on offense in 2015 against everyone but Tennessee and Texas. I'm aware that this game will be in Norman rather than Knoxville, but I also think that we have a better coaching staff now.

Rattler doesn't suck. Had Hurts not transferred in Rattler had positioned himself within a chance of winning the starting job. The guy is going to be a stud. While he won't be the runner Hurts was, the kid will be much better at distributing the ball all over the field. Thats the arm talent we're talking about with Rattler. With that said I think there is no better time to play him than when we go to Norman next year... Early in the season, and one would think it would be the first true test at defense he has faced. Only better scenario would be if the game was in Neyland.

I agree that we have a better coaching staff. I also completely agree that it is not unreasonable to think that our defense could have success. I think Pruitt & Ansley are an absolute homerun when it comes to defensive minds. My original post was in response to the claim that we are absolutely no question's asked going to "stop OU." You can't take recent history/end of 2019 season or our upgraded roster and say that we are a lock to shut down OU's offense. In fact one could take recent history of the past 2 season's early on and use it as an argument that we have been extremely slow to start out the beginning of each season. We struggled at the beginning of each year aligning properly... and now we have new leaders at every level of defense that will be responsible making those calls this year. All I'm saying is that there is absolutely nothing to suggest the original poster's claim. Do I think our defense can be successful? Yes. Are we going to shut them down? No. Thats all i'm saying.

I think our DBs are going to dominate their WRs and I think our OL will win the LOS battle, those 2 things happen I like the Vols in a 28-20 type game.

Bc the original poster is suggesting that we will "stop OU." OU (2nd game) is at the beginning of the season, which directly relates to take a guess... beginning of this last season. We'll have new leaders at every level of the defense, talented leaders yes, but still young. They'll be responsible for properly lining up against a highly effective offense in OU... something that we struggled with regularly at the beginning of this past season. I'm not saying we can't be competitive or even come out of there with a win, but to suggest we stop OU and somehow have become an absolute monster of a defense over the course of this off season is very unlikely. OU will be better team than any of our wins this past season. I loved the way we finished the season but we still have a ton of questions on this team and what they're truly capable of. One of those being how do we actually stack up against really good teams... something that we obviously didn't do well last year.
It's not unreasonable to think that Pruitt is going to start winning some of the big games. He's grown a bunch as a coach, he's established a good staff, he's totally flipped the roster and law of averages says it's got to happen again in Knoxville at some point. Oklahoma is the weakest of our 4 toughest games and their inexperience will be going up against our more experienced positions. I like the Vols in this game. They'll score but I believe the Sooners will struggle in the redzone early in the year and Vols win in an upset.

Bama quit playing championship defense before Kiffin was their OC. Somewhere along the way Saban known for being a defensive genius turned away from that and embraced high powered offenses. Go back to where he allowed an inexperienced freshman QB at Ohio State to blow him out for a NC win. His defenses are okay but nothing to write home to mom about since then.

Cardale Jones wasn’t a freshman and that wasn’t a NC game.
