This is true if and when were in a zone coverage. Too often though our LB's (as slow as they are) are left in man to man coverage against either a RB or the TE and we are just begging for someone to make a big play when that happens. I dont know what the answer is, but I dont feel bad about it because neither does the guy were paying a million dollars.
If you put a safety on a back or tightend, it is normally a blitz situation. Linebackers cover backs and tightends normally. If you go nickel to put a db on a tightend, you get gashed in the run (see Patriots) because you are "light" in the box. When we blitz our safeties a backer can get matched up one on one with a route runner. Or when we double a wideout you get a back on backer situation. They HAVE to be able to cover.
