Defensive Question? RE: our secondary

This is true if and when were in a zone coverage. Too often though our LB's (as slow as they are) are left in man to man coverage against either a RB or the TE and we are just begging for someone to make a big play when that happens. I dont know what the answer is, but I dont feel bad about it because neither does the guy were paying a million dollars.

If you put a safety on a back or tightend, it is normally a blitz situation. Linebackers cover backs and tightends normally. If you go nickel to put a db on a tightend, you get gashed in the run (see Patriots) because you are "light" in the box. When we blitz our safeties a backer can get matched up one on one with a route runner. Or when we double a wideout you get a back on backer situation. They HAVE to be able to cover.

yeah. Im sure you could do so much better. Love arm chair qb's/coachs/gm's.

No one is trying to be an armchair anything, people are spitballing ideas for what could help this defense improve. There are some glaring problems in the defense and everyone has ideas on what could help.

Opinions and information exchange /= armchair coaching

Back to the original question,

WORKING WITH WHAT WE HAVE, are there any adjustments that we could make that might stop the bleeding on defense?

DB is one of the easiest positions to transition from high school to college, with the other being RB, It can be fixed by getting Von Bell and maybe Mckenzie in recruiting. For instance, The coaches instruction to a new DB coming into the VOLS program should be" Cover that guy. Don't let him catch the ball." However, our secondary coaches are unproven(they have proven that they suck) and can't coach. We need better db coaches and a few more db's that can tackle , or at least take a good angle to the ball carrier. Front 7 is not playing too bad

So wrong. CDA is the real deal.

"Post of the year. Sal plays a pressure man to man scheme. It requires players who make plays. Not excuses. You can not play this defense if you can not get off of blocks upfront and get to the ball. It will take time to get the right guys in place."

we need better personnel, plain and simple.

Yes. Get a lead. Allow the defense to play from ahead. The one time that happened (NCSU) we looked good on D. This is not a situation where we can make a trade or sign a free agent. We are what we are. Scheme wise a DC is handicapped without good cover men. Linebackers and secondary. Just the facts.

Its my opinion that we need more speed on the field. Id rather give up 5 yards a carry than to give up these 20 and 30 yard plays that we give up because we simply cant stay close enough to even be a distraction. Forget about size , lets put what speed we do have on the field. No way it gets worse. Speed , speed and more speed. :twocents:

How about the Grits Blitz?

We brought more pressure in the 2nd half and it seemed to work. They burned us on one completion, but Shaw was a lot less effective. He did make one good throw under pressure but receiver dropped it in the end zone.

We can't drop back and cover anyone anyway so why not bring 6 or 7?

We have so many issues on D its hard to really tell if our issue is scheme or personell. Constantly watching Herman get burnt by a TE makes me wanna thow my remote through my screen. Our D lacks speed badly. Our DB's could be the slowest I have ever seen. I still dont understand how on a 3rd and 24 or 26 you dont have a cover 2 with two safeties deep. You know Spurrier and know hes going at the endzone. That play to me was the back breaker. If we could have held them to a FG there that changes the game. Our D isn't exactly getting a ton of help. You had a 10 and a 20 yard punt putting SC into great position.

Moore could have simply made the pick, just like he was positioned to do by his coach. Novel concept, I know....
