Defensive Formation?

I was going to call it the Red Sea 4-3, but we were in white. Did anyone see someone wave a staff?

It's the back up and don't let them out of the back of the end zone defense:blink::banghead2:

I'm not sure what is more painful; watching the Linebackers drop too soon or watching both the DT's stunt their way right out of the play.

Nickle Package, 5 DB's, unless there is a linebacker out on a wide receiver that went in motion. Nice play call by Applewhite, by the way.

Watching the front line run away from the onside kick to open the Bammer game sorta chapped my arse also...

Yeah it looked like Chavis was expecting a pass because he is obviously trying to get a pass rush with the stunts. We can't really blame the d-line for simply being out of positon on the play, however, the linebackers should have been able to fill the massive hole.

Why can't we blame them and why didn't the lb's know their responsibilities? Could it be... uhhhh... coaching?

Well let me see here. If a stunt is called, they run it. It's not their fault the coaches called a play that took them out of it.

The tackles took themselves out of the play because of stunts. The LB's immediately droped back in coverage, IMO it was a bad read by their parts and they should have come up and filled the hole. Neither one of them were touched on the play, it was pathetic. Who knows though, maybe it was a play call where they are supposed to immediately drop back into coverage. From the look of the allignments and stunts, it seems Chavis saw a pass coming.

Yup business called it. That is a nickle and the way the LB's are dropping i would guess a cover two zone.

Actually its not a nickel package. If you watch the very end of the play, Ryan Karl comes out of nowhere diving at the back as he is crossing the goalline. That puts three LB's on the field with 4 lineman. Since there was 4 wide, Karl most likely had to step out of the box.

Oops didn't see that.

I am to say 4-2-5 too, with 2 safeties and the strong safety up to support the run.
Karl is out covering a WR looks like to me.

How can you tell we are in Cover 2 by watching the Linebackers? Isn't that like checking somebody's blood pressure by looking in their mouth?

It is a 4-3, but my point is that ‘Bama was on (or around) our 15 yard line and my observations are as follows:

1) Why would you call a double stunt that completely opens up the middle.

2) Even if a pass was suspected, why call a stunt at all? At the 15, the receivers will be in catch position in around 3 seconds. The shortest distance to the QB would have been through a gap. Since stunts require the slower D Lineman to travel more ground to pressure the QB, why not use a secondary player to attack the gaps?

The song is Queen of Denial (not The Nile), so anyone that wants to blame anything other than terrible coaching, is the Queen of Denial.

Look at how bad Mayo's recognition is on that play. He has literally dropped 2-3 yards deep into the end zone before he realizes it's a run.
